Just remembered this one while reading about the 50+ HR guys....

Only three players have had 40 or more homers in a season, but less than 200 homers for their career. (Excluding any current guys who may have done it and are still active.)

Name them.

Edit to add that all three are post-war but somewhat vintage (50's - 70's).

Jim Gentile, Davey Johnson, Richard Hidalgo, Al Rosen

I don't think Hidalgo is still active, so I think it might be 4!

Tony Conigliaro?

Steve

Well, I just checked, and Conigliaro topped-out at 36, so he didn't do it. Hidalgo last played in 2005, so it is (at least) four players who've done it.

Wow Rob, 4 for 4 (since it looks like Hidalgo is all done).

Any help on that, or was that some incredible knowledge??

Def some help, although I did know Davey Johnson and Hidalgo hit 40HR and figured they both didn't amass 200 HR.

I knew Rosen hit 40, but to be honest I figured he hit over 200HR!!

Gentile I would have never guessed!

Interesting that of the four players, Davey Johnson played the most seasons (13) and hit the fewest career homers (136).

First question: Griffey, Jr.? Just a guess.

Second question: Cobb and...? I would have thought more than two would have accomplsihed that feat.

I believe Ty Cobb hit homers as a 19 year old and a 40 year old.

Still trying to think about the 500 hits with 4 teams - great questions!

Le Grande Orange ... Rusty Staub homered as a teenager and a 40 year old and had 500 hits with 4 different teams.

I think Staub is actually the one with 500 hits with 4 different teams as well! As soon as I saw his name, I remembered that he was the answer to a couple of unique questions.

Name the last two players to drive in 100 runs with less than 10 homers.

Tommy Herr had over 100 RBIs with fewer than 10 HRs in the mid 80s, when the Mets and Cards took turns winning. 1985 or 1987?? Don't know if he was among the last 2, but he did it.

Way to go Bernie, Staub is the answer to both.

Molitor is right.

OK next. Only three men have ever hit 45 or more HR but driven in fewer than 100. Name them.
