Default Do these Ty Cobb cards exist?

Posted By: Richard

The standard catalog sometimes guesses at checklists based on what collectors assume are in a set, based on similar sets, etc. Sometimes they are right, sometimes wrong.

Can anyone cofirm if any of these Ty Cobb cards actually exist?

1909 Croft's Candy E92 Red Back
1909 Nadja Caramels E92
1914 Mother's Bread D303
1914 People's Tobacco Virginia Extra T216
1916 Tango Eggs

Does anyone know if a T215 Pirate Cobb exists? Supposedly not, but theoretically possible. Perhaps a tall tale of one long long ago?

Richard, as a back collector I love this question. All I know is that personally I have not seen any of those cards, nor remember of hearing of them. And would love to see a red backed E92 Cobby..Heck, any T216 Cobby is nice.....I would drool over a VE one....

although there are a few of these known I would be surprised if there are more than 5-10, of this back variation. (I outsniped Toby on this one sad.gif)

Richard, I agree with Leon as I've been collecting Cobb cards for a while now. I would say with as much certainty as one can have in this sort of situation that there definitely does not exist a T215 Pirate, Mother's Bread and Tango Eggs Cobb. As for the others I would still hold out hope.

Leon - fantastic Kotton! I have owned 2 of the tough thin paper version and saw one that was cut up pretty bad, but all 3 were in really poor condition compared to yours. The one you have has to be one of the best, if not the best thin paper Kotton Cobb around.

I don't know if you noticed, but it appears that all of the thin Kotton Cobbs have "Detroit Am." printed at the bottom, while the other Kotton variations with the leaning on bat pose have "Detroit Americans" on the bottom. Just a little bit of useless information.

I seem to recall hearing that Lipset has a red crofts Cobb in an auction long long ago, but have never been able to confirm this.

Jeff - for the Tango Cobb, I always look back to this letter and just wonder if one was really part of this find. If it was, then someone has to have it - burried in some long lost collection.

Richard, I remember that letter; the card is like an urban legend. I just can't imagine that if it existed at least someone could have confirmed its existence or produced a scan.

Doesn't BCD own the Tango Egg Cobb? Or he owned it at some point and sold it?

I never really noticed the bottom caption difference. I upgraded my pose from an E102 Cobby- leaning on bat, to the T216 one above. The Kotton is more my cup of tea. I too thought it was really nice conditioned for what it is...I am hoping to upgrade to a PSA 8 though...

rman when the croft cobb subject came up elkins did confirm with me that at least 1 red cobb is in existence, you might try emailing him for further info. check the old e92 nadja thread to see if a cobb is confirmed in there...i'm too lazy.

In both of the threads on E92 Nadja's. The Cobb was confirmed, but no scans or graded cards. The most recent thread BCD and Lew Lipset (by at least two second hand, but reliable reports) say that they have seen card. There were the following 5 cards that could not be confirmed: Bescher, Donovan, Dougherty, Doyle w/bat and Zimmerman. It does seem strange to me that if Cobb exists that there are no scans or graded cards - usually the top tier HOF cards have by far the largest populations.

That letter was written two years after they sold the cards. I don't why it was written then, but memories have a way of playing tricks on us.

No "Virginia Extra" back, but I do have a Mino back. I've never seen any of those listed above.

is inconclusive. there are at least 125 tango Egg cards not listed on it including Cobbs (2) one of each "E" pose and a Tinker I purchased from Doug from Doug and others. Doug Allen will concur but it goes round and round with debate and I could not get the four different guys to bring forth the tangos that supposedly do not exist via Rob's Tango "reward" in his auction a couple of years ago as they just didn't want to be bothered with it though I certainly wanted the money Rob offered! happy.gif Hey Richard! I moved right by you now so give me a jingle as I your old cell phone is disconnected! I'll meet you a Hon-Kee,corner of Quimby/Tully!
