I've heard from at least a couple of other collectors of 1914 CJs that the 1914 Chance is indeed one of the toughest from the set. I don't know about second rarest but it does seem to be one of the toughest of the set.

Already at 1K & days to go. Seems like it is going to end up pretty strong, no? I am not doing the set but is this an investment type of card?

Thanks guys!

Actually the rarest would be the Bresnahan no # on back. I have seen 2 of these in almost 10 years of collecting the 1914's, and I have scans of 12 different Matty's. As for the Chance, this would be the 4th one I've seen for sale since 1998.

I personally think Cicotte is tuff to find. I am sure there are more out there but I can account for 9 so far and I have talked to Peter Garcia about them. You see the '15's now and then but rarely the '14. I think it is one of those cards people just don't like to let go of. I don't see many Branch Rickey cards for sale either.

Like I said, I've been collecting these for awhile, so here's my list of toughest Cracker Jacks:

1.Bresnahan no #
2 and 3. Too close to call between Mathewson and Chance.
4.Any high numbers, that would be any over card #73.

Oddly enough, some of the more expensive stars like Cobb and Wagner are not that hard to find. I think some of the high number commons are priced way too low.
I agree with Chris, the Cicotte is tough due to two factors: it's a high # and a Black Sox.

Mike, Why are cards over 73 more difficult? Were they printed in two series?

That's what I think, that 1-72 was printed first, then 73-144. I thought this for a long time and I have heard the same from others. It makes sense because the low #'s turn up a lot more often.
