Its in a screw down holder and has Wagner's name printed by a label maker so its got to be real...

He writes..."My Wagner has extreme ware and definitely shows it's age. It sports a Hindu back and is a must own for any antique or baseball card collector. This card, however, is not graded by any grading service. I have talked to many dealers concerning this card and they say that in the market the ratio of Wagner reprints to originals is something like 100:1. They were even joking with me saying I might get jacked even carrying this card around."

Yes, jacked up against a wall for listing this thing!!!

Seriously,I think Ebay should have all auction titles that start with T206 Honus Wagner checked out before they allow it to be listed.

I remember about 10 years ago, on Ebay, some guy had a scrap of orange cardboard, about a half-inch square, in screw-down holder and said it was “a fragment” of a T206 Wagner” -- he actually got quite a few bids, and I think someone bought it for a few hundred dollars. Does anyone remember this auction? Or does someone own this fragment? It was authenticated by some unknown firm.

This auction involved in this thread brings back memories of that auction.

The back does look real. I don't know about that front, though.

He wasted an awful lot of time on that very long description. He could have just said "this is a fake" and that would have worked, instead of his ten page essay.

He's "getting out of the hobby?" What hobby was he in? Why is it the guys selling the "Mona Lisas" always own the crappiest scanners and cameras?

Looks like our good friend Stew has stepped up and bid on this one.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking that guys selling fake cards are reluctant to file non-paying bidder claims.

That Wagner fragment was graded by NASA if I remember right. It was a reprint that was burned all the way around the edges (about 50% of the card was burned off.

That was a fun time on eBay

edited to add pic: mmyr111 Im not sure if this is the one your talking about, but this burnt reprint card was also on ebay about 8-9 years ago, at one time it was in a graded holder by one of those pseudograders

It brings back such beautiful memories. Thanks for the scan. Wow. Now people just paste reprints on the backs of other reprints and cards.

thanks matt m

Since the seller lives about 30 minutes from me I decided to try to set up a meeting with him via Ebay messages.

First he said he would meet me at a pre-determined place (not his home) and I agreed for a Saturday meeting. He then informed me that he couldn't do it over the weekend..."something came up".

So then I suggested anytime Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. He then informed me that he works 3 hours away from home. A six hour hour commute (to and from work) seems a bit excessive to me. Anyway, he just won't be able to meet me.

I guess he would rather work a job that includes a six hour commute each day rather than sell me one card for a hefty six figures. You really have to admire the guy's work ethic.

Louis
