Default Topps 1960.

I have just finished adding cards 375 to 440 in my set in both gray and white, and then was able to add this to the set

Not sure. I think they might have more value if you have a high grade set in the registry.

Here are some other sets from an auction catalog that I remember seeing.

Pretty cool to look at...

Just got this beautiful Bob Feller in today. His last Topps card. It looks even better in person. Really nice centering on it, only slightly off to the left.

Oh, how I love the 1956 Topps set.

Bill nice looking Feller! I also love the '56 Topps set, completed mine about 2 years ago. In my opinion, it's one of Topps best sets. Are you working on a set, or just picking up specific cards?

Default New 52 Topps additions

Picked up these 2 for our continued journey. After shipping, $5/each...I was pretty pleased. Especially love the background colors and the centering (at least on the front).

Been looking to add these to my collection for a while. In my opinion, they're two of the best looking cards of the 50's.

Hi Bill, and thank you.

You know, I'm not sure quite yet what I'm going to do. There are 5 or 6 sets I really like right now, and have dabbled a little in all of them: T206 and T202, the '33 and '34 Goudey, the '53 Bowman Color, and '56 Topps. I think for a while, I'm going to work on a checklist I've come up with of cards I want to get pretty soon. Some of them are also from the '56 Topps set, some aren't from any of the six sets I listed. And some are going to be really expensive, so they will slow me down. Two cards I plan on getting within the next year to two years are the '34 Goudey Lou Gehrig #37, and a '33 Goudey Babe Ruth, either card #53, #144 or #149. #181, of the four, is really the only one that doesn't excite me. It's a nice card, but I really like the design of the other three. The Ruth card might be a reality around tax refund time. Once I've got that list whittled down a little bit, then I might start focusing on set building. I'm guessing I'll be happy with my individual card collection, and ready to start looking seriously at 1 or 2 sets, in about 4 years.

One of the best things about our hobby is that we can do what we want, collect who we want when we want. I'm still relatively young (43 end of September), so I should have plenty of time to get a lot of what I want, God willing.

Default Added Two Whitey Ashburns To Playing Years Master Set

.....his playing years lasted into the sixties ; some of the more obscure issues ( like these two budget busters ) take a long time to track down....Everyone of a certain age and reasonable proximity to Shibe Park ( or whoever listened to a Phillies game on the A.M. band of a radio ) has a fond memory of this original Whiz Kid... we lost him 'way too young...

Nice cards, guys!

Steve, you should get some black paper to put behind the Mick and Don. It will make the cards pop more, because the white borders bleed into the background. It also makes the cards scan better. I've tried all different methods of scanning, and door up with black paper behind loose cards, or slabbed, makes for the best pictures.

Very nice score on the Bobby Grich. Also nice Frank Robinson pickup. I have just a handful of Frank Robinson cards but plan to get them all at some point.

Adam, that Grich is absolutely spectacular! My God. I've looked at a lot of 1971 Topps baseball cards in my time. I could look at another 10,000 and not find another one with edges that clean. Congratulations!

I agree. And what i find so facinating, is that this card is 43 years old, and has a story.
What is it's story???
I mean it's 43 years old and basically, has never been touched. Where was it before somebody graded it. What happened? did the child buy it and it sat in the same spot for 35 years?
What is this cards story? That is waht facinates me about our hobby, every card has a story.

Thanks for the compliments. I've been battling it out for a nice example the last few years and finally finished ahead. I am an Orioles fan and this purchase was for my Orioles Team Hall of Fame set.

The 71 Topps cards are so sharp looking when done right. Unfortunately, so few of them were. I give the 71 collectors a lot of credit as I would go nuts trying to find the cleanest borders. There's just something about the black borders. It's probably why I was a fan of the 86 Topps in my youth and have found myself picking up N300s recently.

Default Catching up on June & July Pick-ups

....stuff's been piling up slowly..... here's my summer pick-ups so far : two different very old discontinued-label CSA-graded cards from 'way back in the early days of Third-Party-Grading ; the '59 Sparky Rookie has the old SCD label with sub-grades on the back like Beckett used to do ; ( there's a new grader that uses the '' SCD'' name and has a colorless grey label but has nothing to do with the old SCD which was affiliated with the magazine ).

And can someone who knows the history of SGC flips please estimate how long ago the '57 Max Surkont was graded ? Looks like an early issue ? It's a gorgeous card and really really hard to find with clear registration and no 'snow' in the black areas. Most are annoyingly blurry ; I like that old label though.

There is a old thread on the changes of PSA and SGC labels in their history

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ght=SGC+labels
Quote:
No pictures, but this is what I was able to dig up about SGC flips/slabs. The dates are speculative..

(1) SG on the front(1998)
(2) SGC on the front, but no 1-10 grade(99-04)
(3) SGC on the front with 1-10 grade + gold label on the back(05-08)
(4) SGC on the front with 1-10 grade + SGC pressed into the back(09-current)

I read something about there maybe having been a change in the placement of the barcode on the "SG" flips. Don't know for sure though..

Also, a semi-related SBC flip(from 1988-90?). Apparently one of the SBC guys was involved in the early stages of SGC and they used many of the SBC concepts..
