Default How do you pay the mortgage???

Posted By: Brad Green

I am curious what each of you do for a living. How do you pay the mortgage? We all collect baseball cards, but we need that paying job to be able to afford to buy these great old cards.

I'll start the thread by saying... I'm an aerospace engineer. Specifically, I use Computational Fluid Dynamics (complex computer programs that solve the equations of fluid mechanics on multiple-processor, high-performance computers) to evaluate the external aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft.

What do you do?

Kind of a dieing breed. I resell IBM, HP, Microsoft, Dell, Cisco, and other mfg's technology. We cater to small to large businesses and have an extremely efficient process for IT procurement. Soooooo biz has been a little slow for me, with all the crap I do on the board, and if anyone is looking for a real good technology supplier that can save their company some bucks on technology....lmk..We are part of a 1.2B company and have been around a long time........Also, this way I can justify what I do on the board to my management well....sort of.....

I don't have a mortgage either...the US Air Force gives me a house (or a tent) wherever I go. In return, I get to fly their airplanes! I'm actually on a three-year exchange to the Royal Air Force in England at the moment.

I'm retired from AT&T Bell Labs where I was a senior Electronics Engineer
designing Data Comm. Modems & associated interfaces for 27 years.
I also taught Electronics & Radar as a 2nd job.

My wife works at Princeton U. and I keep busy on our homestead (on several
acres) in Pennsylvania. So, I am not really that "retired".

Plus I own a UPS Store where we do document services MUCH cheaper than Kinkos, laminating, binding, etc and can ship to you STILL MUCH cheaper than Kinkos (okay, someone tried to sell pork chops earlier)....

Give me a shout Leon! I'm always looking for more hardware/software resources. I'm a Sr. Account Executive (aka: sales guy) for a technology firm in Madison, WI. I work with businesses to implement voice and data solutions to improve communications. Included with services is any hardware or software (IBM, HP, Cisco, Microsoft, Citrix, etc.) required to complete the install.

I left commercial banking 2 years ago, after being in it for 23 years. I then started my own corporation last year. I am currently going through my first tax season. Life is good. I have no home mortgage. paid it off. The only mortgage I have is on some investment property, where the tenants pay the mortgage for me. Is this a great country or what?

I'm a medical ethics prof. teaching medical professionals
and directing a center for health care ethics.
My focus is on end of life issues so spend most of my days
dealing with PEG tubes,MRSA,and Schiavo repercussions.
One perk of being a dinosaur is i haven't had a mortgage in
years.
I have been wondering if i could get a student loan to buy
the more expensive 206's---but luckily, i get oriented to
space and time quickly and realize i'm not a student.

best

I'm a test pilot, so I get to fly a bunch of stuff. When I was operational Air Force, I flew the C-5 and DC-9. After going to Test Pilot School, I was the chief C-130J test pilot at Edwards, also flying the C-17 and T-38. Nowadays for the Royal Air Force, I fly the C-130J, C-130K, TriStar, Tucano, and BAC1-11 (for Typhoon radar testing). I still jump in other stuff as well - yesterday I went castle spotting in a Gazelle helicopter. It's a great way to pay the bills!

My day job is healthcare consulting primarily in the areas of managed care development/contracting and strategic planning. It's a very small business but it's mine. I am also a public elected official in the itsy bitsiest of elected positions and hence the reason I have never published my real name on the open board. I learned a long time ago that these chat boards may come up on google searches.

I too was a Philosophy professor (speciallizing in ethics/symbolic logic...btw, ethics is an arcane word no longer in use )) from the mid 70's thru the mid 80's Then I combined Systems engineering with futures trading until I "temporarily" retired in '95 to care for my lovely wife (who was a wonderful jazz pianist) who finally lost her battle with breast cancer in '99.

Then after a several year period of serious depression and isolation, I resumed futures trading until my Lyme put me permanently on the shelf last year. I will live out my days very modestly slowly liquidating my collectibles.

I am probably one of the only board members who wishes they were older than they are (I'm 58). But life is still so very sweet. Nature and its' glorious variety sustains me (after Physics and Philosophy, Meteorology is my favorite hobby..... collecting is, and has been for 30 years my mistress ), and I can live on ~15k/yr. ...yes that's not a typo.

Best to all.

Bob

PS: to lighten up my post a bit more, let me add that, yes, I do realize that it reads more like a post to a support board than a vintage card board...LOL

Additionally, I believe that within this post I have taken over the all time board record for the aggregate use of parentheses, qouotation marks, and elipses.

One last comment...I'm a bit surprised that so far, at least there are no other current or past futures traders, or pro gamblers (same thing, really), for that matter in our group. But many more people will respond to this very interesting post, so I'm nearly certain that a few will show up. And I have managed to add to the record holding status I mentioned above in this last (I promise) paragraph. And I'm not even a juicer...ROFLMAO

Currently Quality Mgr for a manufacturer in West Michigan. We (Jackson Products) make personal protective equipment for the industrial market - hard hats, welding helmets, goggles, etc. I am responsible for the overall quality system, and also run the test lab where we take product and shoot ball bearings at it, drop heavy weights on it, try to ignite it, etc.

Joann

PS - Bob, I have a Master's Degree in Meteorology from University of Md 1984. I liked Meteo fine, just didn't want to live on the east coast at that time. So from science, to engineering - now in law school. Hard to imagine not working in a factory though. Sterile office environments make me crazy - I like my plant and the machines and hi-los and buzz of activity. So I might not have liked Meteorology anyway. And, lol, maybe the whole law school thing is not that well thought out either. Law office environment? Not unless they put a stamping press in it somewhere!

Edited to say: OMG Geno - Sioux Chief. THAT is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh. And .. yes, mortage.
