Default Coca-Cola Museum - Old Ads with Matty, Huggins, McGraw, Merkle, etc.

Posted By: Trae R.

I can't recall all of the players on this display but below I tried to highlight some of the ads that came out better in the photos we took at the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta over the New Years Holiday. I think the ads are 1913-17'ish.

Random, I know. Enjoy

Isn't it funny how the same pictures of players get recirculated. I recognize the Merkle and McGraw as beeing the same as their M101-2 poses.

So far, I have found 2 Coke ads for players I collect.

My George Gibson ad has a date of 1910. The ad makes mention of George Gibson of the Pittsburg Nationals (Champions of the World) as well. Both are the original newspaper ads. The Gibson ad had been glued to a cardboard backing, but the reverse of the Bresnahan ad has advertising for a St. Louis company/product. It makes sense that Coke would put these ads in the local papers in the city in which the players played.

Steve also makes a great observation. The images are the same as the ones used in the M101-2 Sporting News Supplements. The same image is also used for George Gibson's E125 American Caramel Diecut. I matted my 2 "coke clippings" together to make a cool display.

The ads are an awesome read.

The George Gibson ad reads:

George Gibson of the Pittsburg Nationals (Champions of the World) led the League as catcher with a percentage of .983 and caught more games than any other catcher last year. He writes us that he is enthusiastic about Coca-Cola
You, too, will like Coca-Cola, because it relieves fatigue, refreshes, quenches the thirst and is absolutely wholesome. Delicious-Refreshing-Thirst-Quuenching

5 cents Everywhere

Send 2 cents stamp for our booklet "The Truth About Coca-Cola" and the Coca-Cola Baseball Record Book for 1910. The latter contains the famous poem "Casey at the Bat," records, schedules for both leagues and other valuable baseball information compiled by authorities.

The COCA-COLA CO. Atlanta, Ga.

Whenever you see an Arrow thong of Coca-Cola"

The Bresnahan ad reads:

Bresnahan and Coca-Cola have Cardinal features in common. With Bresnahan in the game everybody is snappy, lively, "stick-to-itive". No leg weariness or brain slowness then. Same with Coca-Cola-its snap, vim, vigor and go make hot weather a joke: weariness a stranger and thirst only an excuse to quench it with real palate tickler. So no wonder Bresnahan likes, drinks and recommends Coca-Cola.

5 cents Everywhere

Send 2 cent stamp for our booklet, "The Truth About Coca-Cola" and the clever and useful scoring device, the Coca-Cola Perpetual Counter.

Whenever you see an Arrow think of Coca-Cola.

I have newspaper Coke ads of John Evers and Eddie Collins. You can find them fairly routinely on ebay I think. Most have been cut down to ad size.

Hey, does anybody know when Coca-Cola took the coca leaves out of its recipe. I wonder if the soda pop was still spiked by 1910. Wouldn't it be something if our heros from the tobbaco card era were on the juice?

For some time, I've collected Wheaties ads from the late 1930s. Now I have something new to search for on eBay ...
