Default Henry Yee Dec. Auction pickups

Happy holidays to everyone on net54!

I managed to win four great photos in the current Dec. Henry Yee Auction.
Here they are:

1) GREAT Allie Reynolds photo shot prior to him starting game 1 of the 1949 World Series. "Super Chief" Allie Reynolds hurled two no-hitters in 1951.
I love the composition of this one with historic Yankee Stadium in the background.

2) 1942 NL All Star pitching staff including Johnny Vander Meer, Whit Wyatt of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs and Mort Cooper of the St. Louis Cardinals.

3) Monte Pearson 1937 Yankees photo. Curveball specialist Monte Pearson hurled the first no-hitter ever thrown at historic Yankee Stadium in 1938.

4) Rex Barney circa 1948 photo. Fastballer Barney hurled a no-hitter in 1948 for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Please share some of yours!
It seems to me that this auction was PACKED with good photos.

There were so many images I liked that I spread out my snipes to thin and lost a lot more than I won. Of the snipes that went through I lost 9 and won 3. If I could have stayed up to watch what I was winning and what I wasn't maybe I could have put higher bids towards ones that I just missed out on by a couple of bids (obviously I have no idea how high the high bidder's bid went).

Here are the three I did win though:

The Landis was the only one that I went into with every effort to win with a Max bid more than double my winning bid. I have really wanted a Landis smiling photo, also I love vintage children photos so this really hit both of those.

Then a couple non traditional DiMaggio photos as well:

Christmas with the DiMaggios

I liked the caption on this one more than the image itself, if there wasn't a caption I probably wouldn't have bought it. It just shows how far security has come at the stadiums.

Leon....

That was probably my favorite photo in the entire offering. Just a killer team shot with tons more personality than the typical posed version. I would kill for one of those Jackets... wonder if even a single one has survived?

Congrats!

I wanted the photo to go with the card. My snipe was 500 more than the winning bid but my manual bid at the last second was 600 more.

Sorry about that. I guess you probably used more common sense than I did. I let the collector in me have his way too often, as he did this time too.
I think I probably overpaid just a little but when would I see another? And I think, without going back, there were 3 other bidders right at or above 1500. I had no earthly idea where it would end. I was hoping to get it for less, of course.

And those are some other great images shown. All of those pictures are really fantastic. Way to go, guys.v Henry had some nice photos as he usually does.

Did anyone get the Pete Gray batting with Nelson? I love that photo, even when my wife saw it she just said "YES!" I asked what that meant she said I should buy it, but when I saw that it was a wire photo of a lesser known player I thought it was going to be easier to get and didn't put in a high enough bid.

I hope to find an original someday.

I've got my eye on some of the non-sport photos ending over the next couple days. There's some incredible stuff in there.

I also did some research on my Lefty Gomez photo and found out it was taken on Opening Day 1937. Lefty pitched that day, though he did suffer a loss. However, Lefty would go on to win the Triple Crown in 1937 and go 2-0 in the series.

I won the Cy Young who was an instructor in the Doan Baseball School in
1938. I loved his great pitching pose at 71 years old!

Ok. So here is what happens when you get eBay gift certificates for Christmas at the same time Henry Yee's auction is ending.

Jeff,
Santa is very smart that way. If he could've only kept the price of the 1926 Team photo down to where I won it. Ah well.

Congrats to everyone on their pickups. Some really nice photos won by all.

Great Pick Ups Mark. I think Henry's write up on the 1926 team photo is what hurt the price for us (made it go up, up and away).... I wish he wouldn't have said anything about it.

I agree, but if your snipe was $600 above your winning bid, there is no way I would've been in there. I was figuring on around $1K. It's a great photo with tons of personality. I hope you enjoy it.

There were 3 other bidders in the 1500+ range so I wasn't alone on the mountain. Another very experienced (board member) Yankees photo collector also thought it would end at around 1000-1100......Had I not already had the Mckibben Jacket piece to go with it I wouldn't have bid at all. It's that cross collecting that kills me financially.

I think what probably happened is that a few, including you, bid much higher than you thought it would reasonable go for, to guarantee you'd win it. If one person does, no big deal, but when 3 do it, the items winds up selling for much more than expected.

Don't worry Leon, you know where you can come to get rid of it once you're done enjoying it!
