I believe that Matt Williams was on that team close to that time frame, not sure what number he wore there though. That would probably be your best case scenario........

None of the usual sources have worked and very few of the cards show player numbers in the photos. The solution is to buy a 1988 program, looks like they can be had for 5-10 bucks though none are listed right now.

I was in Phoenix on business and attended their last game one year. I believe it was 1990. I should have a program around here somewhere. Give me a couple of days and I'll see if I can find it and report back who had that number at the end of that year.

I found the scorecard from the game I attended. Unfortunately, it won't help you. There is no number 16 listed for the Firebirds. The game was on Aug. 29, 1989. I've attached a photo of the Firebirds' players as listed with the scorecard.

Thank you all for taking the time to help me out.
Thanks austinmike for the scan. Greatly appreciate it.
Looks like I should try to find some programs or team sets.
Fingers crossed it's Matt Williams.

Yes, definitely go with the card sets of the era...usually can be had cheaply and will spot your guy.

Also might try start of the season newspaper microfilm from Phoenix...often they print a team roster or some such. Newspapers.com if you know someone with a membership might be a good place to look.

You may hit on some luck here...at least has a photo of each card. Too bad they didnt wear front numbers

Sorry for the delay in responding. I went to a few Firebirds games in the late '80s and just checked a 1988 scorecard.

#16 was worn by Brian Ohnoutka in 1988
#16 was worn by Mike Jeffcoat in 1986
