Default Graded Photographs

Maybe I haven't been paying attention but I've never noticed graded photographs like this on ebay before. I believe CGC is affiliated with SGC.

There doesn't appear to be a numerical grade, just the notation "fine" Doesn't tell you if it's a first generation photo, and I have no idea what the full grading scale is. But the logo does lead you to believe that it is SGC sanctioned. Who even knows these days; it could be bogus. Never saw this before.

CGC is their comic division, Interesting holder. Looks like a binder page that's been heat sealed. Maybe one of our comic collectors can enlighten us as to what is going on.

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

The photograph is a later generation press/publicity photo for a 1979 television documentary. It was not made from the original negative.

For a brief look at later generation press photos see the below link:

I have a number of old photos that I'd be interested in authenticating and slabbing. I'm gonna have to look into this...

Adam, if an "authentication service" that misdates a photograph by over 75 years is what you're looking for, go for it.

Vintage photography is esteoric. But, if a photo's caption mentions television, WWI, the 1909 World Series and that Johnson lost the pictured fight's rematch in 1915, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to deduce that the photograph isn't from 1903.

Interesting. Do they only "slab" professional and newservice photos? Will they "slab" my Matty McIntyre collection photos? Will they trust my word that the subject of the photo is who/what I say it is?

I bought a photo that I recognized as from one of Jack Dempsey's 1920s films from an outfit called "Jay Parrino's The Mint" out of Kansas. I then contacted CGC to inquire about the service. They responded that they are testing it out with this particular dealer and are not yet ready to offer the service to the public. Meanwhile, the image comes fully sealed in a holder made of plastic that is about as thick as the plastic used for top loaders, but without the rigid strips of plastic. It is 3-hole punched for notebook insertion. Here is a picture of the picture:
