Default How to remove crayon from cardboard?

Posted By: peter ullman

I know similar topics have been discussed ad nauseum re. removing pencil marks and such...but...is there a safe way to remove old crayon from a T card back? I've heard using an iron gently over wax paper will cause the wax/crayon to come off on the paper. Has anyone tried this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do those nylons work on walls too?

I have crayon markings on almost every wall in the house.  3 year old twins will do that..

Do they have to be brand new nylons, or can my used ones do the trick?

Peter,

Wearing nylons are optional but I would suggest a dap of Goo Gone and a q-tip.

it only works if it is a card of Joe Nameth. He made some cash wearing panty hose if we all recall.

Crayon comes off with panty hose but I prefer tight silk, such ladies panties (insert joke here) or a soft necktie. Everyone has their method of choice.

IMHO soft silk works best for crayon because it grabs and removes when using it in a single upward direction. Rubbing back and forth or circular with panty hose tends to rub it in more. This may cause an abnormal luster (it is a wax)...therfore altering the card surface.

Crazy as it sounds, I've done this a ton of times, using various colors and materials.

Experiment on junk cards first.

Good luck,

Kevin

Tell me it ain't so Kevin!!! After seeing your mugshot a few months ago (in one of those "lets see some faces" threads). I had an image of someone who pounces on "evil-doers" just for the fun of it. But now, I find out that within your arsenal of card doctoring tools, you carry around some soft silk nylons???

Dude!!! What's up with that? You are not my card doctor hero anymore.

By the way, where is the best place to purchase soft silk nylons? I'm thinking of going with a dark color.......

Lovely Day...

Be not afraid.

The bottom pic is the card after all the crayon was removed. Any colored spots or stains left, were on the card from the start. You can't tell but I originally colored the white right border, then removed it.

Just so my man-card is not revolked, I used the back of a silk tie.

Enjoy!

Kevin/All...

Just curious... I am assuming you wrote "Kevin" on that card recently, and obviously it came off nicely as you demonstrated.

But does it come off as easily when the crayon marks have been on the card for years (or decades?) Just wondering if/how much the length of time matters. I would assume that vintage crayon from the '50s might be tougher to remove?

mark...I'm wondering the same thing? How long have crayons been around? Answer: Apparently 1903 they were introduced!

Well...I took one of my least favorite silk ties yesterday and cut it into pieces. I gently attempted to remove the "crayon" marks on one of my t-206's. I'm guessing my card's crayon is really old and won't come off...or it may be some kind of colored pencil...but I had no luck!

Crayons now are made of completely different (safe) material then they were when we (I) was young. An entirely different ball game.

You should post a picture of it.

or

There is a guy on the nonsport board that removes stains (Stainman) from cards for a fee. States his company, Gone with the Stain, cleaned up a 1915 CJ's set that all got graded by PSA.

They use oil based solvents, which I guess is now acceptable. His post can be found under the topic "Cards found; please help N9; N10; N26 and N27?"

From Crayola website:

The Crayola crayons of today are made by essentially the same formula as that of the original crayons made in 1903. Improvements and minor adjustments have, of course, taken place over the past 90 years, but the crayon formula is as guarded today as it was then.

I too have had good results with nylons and silk stockings. Another way is to use lighter fluid or acetone
and then rub with the stocking.

Again, try it on some beater first.

Some have also used a fabric softener sheet (used)

Good luck.

Steve

Uh...Peter. I was being sarcastic. Guy is charging to doctor cards. How he conducts his business is no business of mine but I personally would not point you in that direction.

Have you tried soaking it in water. That works....sometimes. You really have nothing to lose by doing it. It's not a Wagner or a Plank is it (LOL).
