Default Who's This Guy With Connie Mack?

Posted By: Robert S.

I picked up this photo in an antique shop last weekend for $5. The reverse has an International News Photos stamp from the 1940s (as per Fogel's Mastro book), but no caption.

As the seller put it: "I don't know who either of those guys are, but they sure do look important."

Any idea of the identity of the guy with Connie? Any help appreciated...

It appears to be some lucky guy who just happened to meet Connie on the train they are riding on. Can his smile get any bigger?

To me it looks like Charlie Grimm. Grimm was a batboy for the A's and was signed by Connie Mack and I am thinking this was taken for the 1929 World Series and might be a later use of the photo or something. I might be wrong but I just pulled out a few Charlie Grimm signed photos I have and it sure looks like him to me, and since he knew Mack pretty well, it makes sense.

I never knew he was a batboy. Look at this photo of Grimm and compare those ears they sure look similar...

My dating to the 1940s was only based on the Fogel book's assertion regarding the news stamp on the reverse. It's too light to scan well:

Did Connie look that old in 1929? If so, I applaud him for lasting another 25+ years!

On closer look at the ears, they're close but hard to tell...

Connie did look old in 1929, btw, but that means nothing:

I've already got my $5 worth of entertainment with the Daniel J. Travanti's father remark!

I think Connie was born old...

The guy looks a little like Bob Hope to me. Then again I'm a terrible judge of faces.

I agree with the above, Bob Hope.

The picture Frank posted does not look too much like Grimm, but one of the photos I have of him looks closer. Might not be him afterall.

No way that's Bob Hope. Bob had a pretty pronounced cleft in his chin.

I don't think it's Bob Hope either. I agree with Mike - probably just some guy who recognized him on the train. Also, Mack has that typical celebrity pose they take when asked for a photo. Nice photo though.

Hmmm...I may not have been alive in the 1920, 30s or 40s, but I don't think people traveled on trains with their own news agency photographers in the hopes of meeting someone famous.

Moroever, if the photographer was simply following Connie, the news agency likely would have cropped the guy out or not issued the photo at all, if it was some random train meeting.

The unknown guy in the photo may just have been some contest winner or someone of that ilk -- meaning, not a baseball-related person or anyone famous, but someone newsworthy on that day and forgotten ever since.

All I know is he is happy...and I was happy to pay $5 for Connie.

Good point Robert. Maybe a contest winner of sorts. I just think that the photo has that "I'm a celebrity and I'll be happy to take a picture with you" feel to it.

Maybe David will chime in as this is right down his alley. I'd be the first to admit that I know very little about vintage photography, photographers, where they were, or who/when they shot. Bottom line is I love the photo and would buy them like that all day every day for $5 a pop. Nice pick up!

A vote for Grimm ....

Oh, Mr. Grimm, Oh, Mr. Grimm,
These contenders may well tear us limb from limb
We may emulate the dive
Of the Cubs of '25
We ain't that bad, Mr. Gallagher,
That's what you think, Mr. Grimm
