Virgil "Fire" Trucks circa 1952 era game used Adirondack bat
Hi Mike,
Great idea for a new thread! I'm thrilled to have recently picked up this circa 1952 vintage game used Adirondack bat of Detroit Tigers fastball pitcher Virgil "Fire" Trucks. In 1952 Virgil Trucks joined Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer (1938) and Allie Reynolds (1951) as the only 3 pitchers to accomplish the feat of hurling two no-hitters in a single season. It's important to note that since 1952, only three pitchers have joined this list: Nolan Ryan (1973) and Roy Halladay (2010) and Max Scherzer (2015) making this one of the most exclusive clubs in ML history. Sadly, 4 of these 6 pitchers are now deceased. Pitchers bats are rare. Finding a vintage, game used bat with tons of use, that was actually signed by Trucks made this an unbelievable pickup for my advanced no-hitter collection. Scott, Max Scherzer of the Wash. Nationals became the 6th pitcher to accomplish this feat in 2015. He no-hit the Pirates on 6/20/15, just missing a perfect game by hitting a Pirates batter with 2 outs in the 9th. My wife and I were most fortunate to have attended this game. Scherzer also no-hit the Mets on 10/3/15.

Yankees
Beautiful Dugan bat. Amazing Jeter. They represent the Yankees' first and last WS winners. It would be interesting to have them side by side for comparison.
In keeping with theme of Yankee infielders, here is one from their first pennant winning team. Who else has some?

Nice Dugan bat. I picked up a Dugan photo a few weeks ago and if you look closely you can see that same tape application on my photo. Pretty cool

I always assumed the tape was applied to fix a crack or some damage. Its exciting to see that it actually could have been placed there by him. Thanks for sharing it. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

This was the bat that really got me started collecting game used equipment. I had a few bats and I was activly looking for a Bonds Gamer. I picked up a Sosa bat that was cracked. I had slways avoided cracked bats but seeing and holding it the game use just jumped out at me. The crack was just a part of what happens when a player like Sammy swings a bat a good number of times.
Then I saw this in an auction not my favorite bat manufacturer but I had not seen another Bonds bat with this level of use offerd for sale in the 2 years I had been looking. Like others have mentioned the deep stich marks are an instant reminder of who was swinging this bat. PSA gave this a 9. |

Arrived today in the mail after some delay due to a shipping problem....could not be happier...took a shot because there were no backside pics or barrel end pics available...bat was mailed from Georgia....68-70 game used Hank Aaron 302 Adirondack 63 A model....35 inches...33.9 oz...lots of use with ball marks/cleat marks and a nice faded 44 on the barrel end as well as the knob end. Will have this bat for a long time.

how to start?
Hi. Welcome to this side of the hobby. To my mind, collecting game used or pro model bats, caps, gloves, etc. takes the baseball collector much closer to the actual game.
If I were starting out, I would spend some time searching for bats on old Heritage Auctions, MEARS auctions, Robert Edward Auctions, Hunt Auctions sites.... they all have archives. This should give you a rough picture of what is/was out there and, in the case of very old bats, how often (rarely) they are available. If you have a favorite team, that can help you search. There a number of books, booklets, and a few articles that are useful if you become hooked.

You ought to like this one, then.
Giants closer Rod Beck. Rod got 18 AB's in his 7 years with the Giants and rapped out 4 hits (with one RBI) for a .235 average. In his 7 years with other teams, he only got 2 more AB's . Altho he didn't hit often or for average, Rod loved to take BP! I think he may have learned his taping technique from Bonds.

Bill White Gamer
I went outside my comfort zone because growing up I so enjoyed Bill White when he was Was paired up with Phil Rizzuto calling Yankee games on TV. In the late 60's early 70's we had a Black and white Zenith TV that we would watch games on while sorting cards on our game table.
Added to that He was an 8x All Star And was President of the National League!!. Thats a lifetime full of Baseball. Anyway my oldest gamer PSA gave it a 9 despite the crack on the Handle. So they must have seen alot of characteristics they liked on the bat. I know I like it. |

Rickey Henderson circa 1986-1988 NY Yankees game used bat
Here is one modern game used bat that I own in my personal collection that I really like:
A circa 1986-1988 era game used Rickey Henderson (HOF) bat that shows outstanding use and was vintage signed by The Man of Steal during his tenure with the NYY. The barrel exhibits extensive grain separation and some checking, but remains uncracked. The signature is big & bold. The knob has Rickey's uni # 24 written on it with what appears to be the same gold Sharpie that Henderson used to sign the barrel. I'm not sure what more you could ask for as a bat collector, but it certainly checks off all the boxes for me. Last edited by Scott Garner; 03-18-2020 at 04:11 AM. |
