Default Joe DiMaggio 56-game hitting streak ended 70 years ago today...

70 years ago today (July 17th), DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak was halted. It's one of the most amazing records in baseball, and one that will likely never be broken.

Show your Joe DiMaggio cards...

Default Hey guys......read all about it.

Early this year a well-researched and well-written book on Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak was in print. Simply titled "56",
it tells the story of this BB record that many say will never be broken.

Joe's streak started May 15, 1941. It did not receive much fanfare for quite a while, as Joe was typically getting only one hit per
game. The fans (and the sports media) started paying attention to the streak when Joe broke Earl Combs 29 game Yankee record.
In the 32nd game, Joe batted 3 for 3, then everyone started getting excited. From that game on to the 56th game, Joe hit at an
unbelievable .460 clip.

Furthermore, after Joe broke Willie Keeler's 44 game record, Joe batted at an amazing .510 clip during the final 12 games.

Check it out.....you don't have to be a Yankees fan to appreciate this story.

What I always found incredible...

DiMaggio drew a walk in the game immediately preceding the 56-game hitting streak. He also walked in the hitless game that ended the streak - then went on another 16-game hitting streak.

Adding the two games where he drew walks without getting a base knock, DiMaggio had a staggering on-base streak of 74 consecutive games.

I sent Keltner a photo to be signed about 25 years ago and he returned a nice package with postcards and a letter.

I mentioned that July 17th was my birthday. It was obvious he really enjoyed talking about the game where the streak ended.

By the way July 17th is also the day that Ty Cobb and Dizzy Dean died and Lou Boudreau's birthday!

Amazing for sure, but Ted Williams reached base safely in 84 consecutive games in 1949. WOW!!
