This story wins! One of my favorite cards is a 1976 Dick Pole card. My two brothers and I were trapped in a mall, while my mom was trying on some outfit for some event. This was back in the day when you could still smoke in a mall, and sure enough, in the mall ashtray, was a 1976 Dick Pole. Well, you can hardly imagine the boost in morale, from three young boys in a women’s clothing section, to suddenly have a Dick Pole card thrust upon them. My mom never did understand why it was so funny. Still makes me laugh…

Graig Nettles was my favorite player when I was a kid, and when I read about the error card, I was dying to get one. But they were selling for all kinds of money, and I certainly couldn't afford it.

My father left when I was 9, and my mother worked three jobs to take care of my sister and I. For my birthday that year, she bought me the 1981 Fleer "C" Nettles error. She got it at the local card shop, and paid $17 for it. In 1981 in my house, $17 might as well have been $17,000.

I still have it, it's my favorite card. They say you can't take it with you, but I'm taking that one with me.

As with others, my favorite is always changing, but I will go with this 1907 Detroit Seamless Steel Tubes Co. postcard of Ty Cobb today.

Just beats out the 53 Campy. I was given this for my 13th birthday in 1986. Dad bought it through Kit Young catalogue for $35 which was the most we had ever spent on a card. Dad didn't even have one for himself. He passed away almost 20 years ago so this one is extra special.

Default Favorite Cards

I have three favorites, all for different reasons. Great Thread!

1) Matty- He is my favorite player and this card is so beaten up, but I love it. Thanks to Luke for a great BST purchase. Matty exemplifies high character and great excellence on/off the field. Not to mention he is a veteran. Grateful for his legacy and his cards are awesome.

2) Lord Burghley- An homage to my favorite movie of all time, Chariots of Fire. the character Lord Lindsay was partially made in likeness of Burghley and he always brought a smile to my face. Now owning the card has kept the smile on my face. Amazing.

3) Pudge- This was my first card I ever got. One day I'll get it slabbed for the heck of it, but I always cherish it as it reminds me of my childhood. Brings back memories of gathering as a family to catch up and watch baseball, cheering the perennial 3rd place AL West Rangers. Very fun now that they are in the playoffs, and Bush threw out the first pitch tonight to Pudge!

Thank you, Good Sir. Means a lot as I am a big admirer of your collection.

Kevin, that Cobb is among my favorite images of him— looks like something out of Mad Max, just a cool, badass pose.

Default Ty Cobb owned!

The provenance behind this photo being a Ty Cobb possessed photo is everything. I could lose everything else, but this, is irreplaceable.

Never thought I'd be fortunate enough to own these. Probably the best, pretty much unknown, baseball player I can think of.

My favorite card in my collection and it’s my favorite card in the hobby. It is my true “grail card” and I’m grateful to own it.

Great, GREAT stuff guys! I have lots of cards that I love, but it’s the totality of my collection that gives me joy. That said, I love super unique, super oddball, super rare items. For me, this postcard captures all three of those attributes to a tee!

This postcard was sent by HOF umpire Bill McGowan to his then girlfriend in 1915. I’ve never seen anything like it, but I love it! McGowan umpired in the tri-state league in 1913, so I presume this postcard was made then and probably by him. He would have only been 17 years old!!!!

At the time of this discovery, the earliest known card of McGowan was from 1948. So this pre-dates that card by roughly 35 years!!

To answer this question a different way, of my cards that give me that, "I can't believe I own this" feeling, I think it's this one today.

If you lived in Detroit in 1976, the Bird was the word. His card in 1977 was all the rage among us 11-year-olds.

Something about this one - the unique pose, the color - they can bury me with this one.

The Glazner, which I bought from Leon, has been my favorite card for the past 10 years. The Killifer, which I bought from Bob Lemke, is a close 2nd.

In addition to the Yankees, my other passion is 3 cushion billiards so... Harry Billiard - played 6 games for the Yankees in 1908. I am also really partial to my W600 Chesbro, and of course, the Mick. I guess I should do something about photo sizes!

My favorite is the Diamond Star Greenberg. It is the first vintage card i ever saw and bought in 1989 at a local card show in NY (first card below). I had collected cards as a kid in the early 70’s but never knew about the broader hobby. Aside from being a cool-looking card of a historically great athlete, looking so boyish and earnest, it drew me to the culture of past days and history which i love about vintage collectibles. I have picked up a few more as i just like collecting that card.

I don't normally buy autographs but when I saw this one, I just had to have it.

For Pre-War - Feller OPC RC

Post War - Ryan RC. A birthday from my dad in the mid 80s. $20 card at the time. Later, the first card I ever submitted for grading. SGC 70 (5.5).

Mines a recent win though REA...very rare and under appreciated card, nearly impossible to find with this eye appeal. I still can't believe I won it.

If I have to pick just one, then it would probably be this one.

Hasn't changed in 17 years...still my favorite card and some day I hope to own an entire one! Has not one iota to do with price...just simply a gorgeous card. I can still remember the early 2000's seeing an SGC60 one available for around $250.00. I just didn't have the funds at the time to snag it.

1957 Mantle. The card made quite an impression on me as a kid, and I still enjoy looking at it every day.

Wow...that card makes it look like every other Mendlesohn card I've seen has been trimmed...they all seem to have tiny or non-existent borders.
