Significance of N28 Allen & Ginter Set?

I'm trying to learn about this set, and would like to know any significant points about it. Is it the first what, nationally distributed set? First full color set? I am reading conflicting things. I know it is a hugely significant issue, if for no other reason than its beauty, but would love to know as much as I can on it. Thank you for your input!

It has great lithography and some top tier HOF'ers. It is certainly one of the the first nationally distributed sets. This from the Oldcardboard site.

It was always assumed the set was issued in 1887, but we now know it was 1888. John Clarkson was traded to Boston in April, 1888, and he appears in the set wearing a Boston uniform.

did Allen & Ginter or old judge come first?

N167 Old Judge were issued probably in 1886, and the first N172's in 1887. So they preceded A & G.

When I first re-entered the hobby as an adult I was told N28s were the first set produced. And Mickey's '52 was his rookie!
