Default Help with a group of 1959 Bazooka

Hi Guys:

A friend bought the below lot from Joe E and has asked me to help him sell the cards he does not want.

I am NOT into graded cards so I need some help.

Will PSA or SGA grade any of these other than authentic? I think I heard the cards have to have some of the dotted lines.

In your eyes are any of the cards grade worthy? If so what grade would you give each card. Please list for me say for example Wertz PSA 4, Ashburn PSA 5 etc.

If you want close up scans of any of them PLMK. I think you can enlarge some of the four photos in the listing to see condition, dotted lines etc, but if not I can get you close ups.

Finally, if these will/can just be graded as authentic, is it advisable in your eyes to have them graded?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide

Best,

Fred

Getting a numerical grade on that issue is pretty tough. I believe that if any portion of the dotted line is missing it will only grade the dreaded A. Send an email to PSA and SGC and I am sure they will confirm their guide line to receive a numerical grade.

FWIW, if the Bob Cerv is available please send me a PM with what you're asking.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Larry and Dustin.

Is the "dreaded" authentic better than leaving them raw? Anyone have views on this?

I personally don't think "authentic" is necessarily a dreaded grade on these things. They were meant to be cut, and who cares whether they were cut on the line or outside of it? I understand the need for grading companies to make the distinction but, as a collector, all that matters is that it's nicely cut out. If they were mine, and I was looking to sell, I'd probably get the rare/high value ones graded along with any that I hoped would get a numerical grade. For the others, it's probably not worth it. I remember getting very little when I sold SGC graded, common 59 Bazookas.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek with my dreaded A comment. I just find the TPGs to be unduly harsh on this and other issues. A pristine copy cut right on the lines gets the same designation as one with a rough cut and a crease which limits the chance to sell the holder. You will likely still be able to sell the Mantle, Mays, and Aarons for a enough more slabbed to cover the grading fees but the rest I don't know that it will be better than break even. Plus you may want to consider the extra time it takes you to sell them if you have to submit. Not sure what turnaround time would be but if I was into these for almost 9K I wouldn't want to spend more grading them and wait an extra 2 weeks minimum before I could sell them in the hopes that maybe I clear an extra $300 at the end of it. I would start selling them raw if they were mine.

No, actually I would keep them because they're awesome and I never want to part with anything.

There are three people competing in the PSA Set Registry:

Looks like the vast majority of the cards in those sets are graded Authentic or Poor.

And for what it's worth, this card recently got a PSA 5:

You can see that the border is visible the entire way around the card. So if your cards match this, they have a shot of getting a grade instead of AUTH.

Fred, keeping future financial responsibility at the forefront, go with PSA.

Nice lot re some of the short prints, regardless of the grade. And with hand-cut cards or really rare cards, I vehemently disagree with the adjective "dreaded" when applied to "Authentic."

Happy collecting,

Larry
