Default What Web Host/Platform do you use to host your Website?

Posted By: Brian McQueen

I'm looking to build a second website here in the near future. I currently use Geocities for my own collection but was wondering what other free or relatively inexpensive Webhosts are out there. I realize the pitfalls that come with a free webhost (ie...lack of your own domain name, site crashes when too many people access your page all at once, etc...) however I'm looking to try something new out without too much of an initial investment before I have a chance to access whether it's worth upgrading or not.

Also, I think photogalleries such as PhotoBucket and Imageevent are great, yet probably not what I'm looking for here since I want full control over the design/layout and something to build from the ground up. Thanks in advance for any input....

Regards,
Brian

Lee and I use Fat Cow. It costs $99/year for your domain name and hosting. The only drawback that I don't like is that their servers cannot handle active javescript. This is the format that my friend uses for her toy collector bio site and the tempplated I want to use for the Net54 bio site. Her site is really coll becuase it allows a person to write and edit their own bio and the site only only needs to approve the new additions/changes.

They are very cheap ($4.95/month) and the feature set is robust.

Their tech support is incredible quite honestly. They get back to you with answers right away and... I am not a tech guy and they have been very willing to fix all of my screw ups - and they never charged me extra for it.

I highly recommend them.

In the almost 10 years I've been developing web sites (commercially), I don't think I have seen a better price than http://www.seanic.net/. For as little as $4 USD a month you can host a web site. That covers 1 domain name for the year, as well.

To be fair, I've only ever hosted very simple sites with them (nothing more complex them some simple PHP; and no MySQL database or anything like that). As such, I've never had a need to even try to contact their support people, so I have no idea how capable they are in that regard.

All of this being said, we've never had ANY problems with their uptime; no complaints about the site being inaccessible, etc. I have been kicking around the idea of putting together a site for my modest collection, and will certainly host with them (although one of the other packages to get the database option).

Richard.
