Default Getting healthy, spending less, and adding cards!

At the suggestion of a reader in the "January Pickups" thread, I thought I'd share my successful formula with our larger group.

The idea was to somehow accomplish three New Years Resolutions at once--
  • Lose the 40 pounds I gained after my divorce
  • Reign in my spending, even/especially on cards!
  • Complete the 1956 Dodgers team set from scratch
I won't claim it's not nerdy, but I managed to find a way to tie these goals together in a manner where I can be successful and have fun. So far, it's working really, really well. I feel great, I'm spending very little, and I'm making good progress on my team set.

It's a system that can probably work for all of you, so I'm happy to share it. Detail is on my blog at--

Can't help but agree with Steve on this one. Good system, smart goals. I look forward to hearing about your successes as the year progresses, and am already enjoying watching that Dodger's team set come together.

Good luck!

Richard.

Jason,
I'm so glad you decided to put this in its own thread. I can't wait to see the progress both in your collection but more importantly your well being.

Keep the progress coming and all the best to you!

Drew

Thanks for the kind words and support, everyone! The only thing that KILLED me so far, since I decided to apply the Dodger Dollar account to all hobby purchases--not just the '56 Dodgers--was I had to pass up a very nice 1950 Life magazine with Jackie Robinson on the cover. I'd seen grubby copies for sale around $30-$50 for months, but here was one for $30 (with shipping) that looked sharp and didn't even have a mailing label. I wanted to pull the trigger but not quite badly enough to eat 15 apples I guess. Still, it was the biggest test of my discipline to let that thing go.

At the moment, I have $38 Dodger Dollars in my account and am deciding between splurging on 3-4 '56 Brooklyn commons or saving a little longer to shoot for the Duke. Will keep you posted.

Congrats on your success so far. Great self control too. I wish I had more self control but am not quite ready to make it a resolution. Good luck on your journey Jason!!

Spent ten of my Dodger dollars on this card late last night. RIP, Mr. Cub!

I admire and applaud your determination, Jason. Had to wonder why, after my divorce, i actually lost weight, and then remembered that my ex even glommed all the cookware and china, and i was so broke could not afford to eat out. Lot's of sardine sandwiches in those days. Good luck with your goals.

Diverted $29 Dodger Dollars to get the Hank Aaron 1959 Jet magazine I thought I'd never find. And a handful of other Jets were part of the lot. Even Mr. Cub!

I like the action scene where it looks like he didn't bother sliding for what turned out to be a close play at the plate. I can relate to that from my own softball beer league playing days!

Added two more...Walter Alston MGR card and a Sept 1955 Sport magazine with Duke Snider on the cover. Once I complete the Topps team set, I'm hoping to display it alongside a few framed magazine covers like this one.

On the Alston, the tape is on the holder and not the card.

Thanks. I am really enjoying collecting these magazines. Other than my Hank Aaron mag collection, which is rather sizable, I can count the rest on my hands. Still, I find that the ones I pick up add a tremendous amount of aesthetic appeal to the card displays I like to make.

What's awesome is that you can find pretty decent copies of magazines like this in the $10-$20 range. As I sit in my office, I can look at my walls and see three Jackie Robinson SPORT and SPORT LIFE covers from 1949-1951, a 1939 LIFE Joe DiMaggio, and a 1941 LIFE Ted Williams--all framed and in remarkable shape for their age--with the total cost of all but the Williams being less than what I paid for the frames.

Just added my tenth of 24. It was a PSA 4 before I took it out of the holder. I"m not a big grading guy, but I have to admit I was surprised it didn't grade higher.
