Default Babe Ruth Strip gone mad...HIGH END

Check out this one that just ended...touted as high end. I'd have thought a crease running vertically cutting the babe in half would disqualify this card from the "high end" moniker.

Apparently not...and note the strong "valuation!"

As I’ve stated many times before, “high end” in the description of so many listings (which clearly are NOT high end) makes me throw up in my mouth.

I think the sale price at that level more reflects that it had a number grade vs the common "auth" on the hand cuts. I would far prefer a more presentable auth personally, but people are obsessed with the silly number.

As for "high grade"...redic.

I think almost all strip cards are hideous, but $1,281 sure isn't "high end" when it comes to Ruth cards.

Personally, I prefer "SIC!!!!" cards that are the true "Holy Grail" of collecting. Particularly if they were found in an uncle's attic, being sold "as reprints" but "I can be the judge".

That's actually one of the more attractive strip cars I've seen. Doesnt look bad for the grade either.

This one is mine. Certainly not "high-end" but I've always considered any Ruth card with the position as "pitcher" should fetch a premium.

+1

My first reaction was "nice card." Well preserved considering the low quality paper it was printed on. There aren't too many 1920 Babe Ruth cards floating around.

I always wondered why a Ruth card from 1920 would have the "pitcher" designation. He only pitched a couple of games for the Yankees. When Ruth came to the Yankees in 1920, he threw four innings during a spot start that year, and pitched nine more innings across two games in 1921. Maybe this card came out at the beginning of the 1920 season and most people still thought of him as a pitcher?

My theory on the 1920 W516's was that, since the purchase from Boston was in the off season (January 1920), these cards were printed before the start of the season and therefore the image is Ruth in a Red Sox uniform with the position of "pitcher". The W516 appears to be Ruth "following through" after the M101 pose.

Decide for yourselves:
