Default T206 Frank Chance question

Here is something that I have wondered for years. The Chance yellow portrait is more than double the populations of the red portrait, and the batting pose. But yet, it has always had higher SMR prices than the other two. Just has always seemed odd to me for some reason. Looking forward to getting some thoughts....Thanks

I have always thought the Yellow Portrait is a great looking card -- the nicest of the three Chance offerings. But there is no way it should have a higher SMR than Red Portrait or even Batting. Both are more difficult, and Red Portrait in particular fetches much more at market.

You mean the SMR is not a reliable pricing guide?

Hi Kevin

In the overall population of these three Chance cards, the Chance (yellow portrait) cards were printed with some very tough backs (BROAD LEAF 350, 1910 COUPON,
red HINDU, LENOX, SOVEREIGN 460, etc.), which of course affect the price of this Chance.

And, as Scot said....."the Yellow Portrait is a great looking card".

Furthermore, I've been selling T206's since 1982, and my experience indicates the yellow portrait Chance is certainly more popular than the other two Chance cards.

I have a sizeable run of backs of this Chance, my favorite is this one......

I've noticed the same thing. These are the PSA pop reports:

Chance Yellow Portrait - 126 graded 6 or higher
Chance Batting - 66 graded 6 or higher

In November I bought both cards in PSA 6 condition. The portrait cost $820, the batting pose cost $678. I don't know why it's this way, but I think Scott is probably correct: the portrait is a much more popular card.

Batting is boring for me for some reason. Go figure.....

But I've always preferred the red portrait over the yellow. That being said, I got this EPDG for a steal. His EPDGs have a lower pop for HOF EPDGs. Still need Red and Batting.

I've always felt the yellow background had the best eye appeal, but I would call it more orange than yellow. Here's the one from my HOF set:
