Default card you bought because you liked it...not "needed" it...

Posted By: leon

Let's see any cards you picked up because you thought they looked neat...not because you needed them.....This might be the best set yet that can be collected on a budget...I picked this up a few weeks ago for about $50.....W575-2 (V100's have some great poses too...)

I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

I know game cards aren't very popular, but these portraits are gorgeous in my opinion.

Yep thats how the trouble starts

I bought the first one shown below because I liked it.

That brought me to buying the second one shown below because now I am 'into' the set.

Since my focus on my pre-war collection is pretty much down to Home Run Kisses catchers, and none have even surfaced recently, I decided to collect a few 1952 Bowman catchers.

When I started collecting again as an adult, I initially was attracted to the set, but later traded them off as my collection evolved. The set really captures catchers very well.

Received this yesterday:

Patrick

This was a spure of the moment purchase, but i'm glad I made it. Since purchasing it, it has became one of my favorite cards. I love the slightly tinted borders, the blue font, and the great color.

Although ... I liked it so much it was almost worse than needing it!

And this one I Best Offer'd in the last few days because I just flat out liked it! It's from the 1933 Sanella set. The only other bb card in that set is the Ruth. Cool looking card though.

Zach,
That Lajoie w/bat has always been one of my favorites (T206 or T213). Great card!

not exactly vintage baseball --- but I think on topic.

When I was looking through antique photos (for sports related ones) -
I came across this photo and had to purchase it.

The expression on this lady's face is just striking
I could almost feel the hard life she might have had by looking at the picture.

I have no need for the photo... but purchased it because I liked it -

I try to focus on turn-of-the-century baseball, but sometimes stray.

When Jefferson Burdick said something to the effect that "I'd rather have a hole in a card, than a hole in my collection", he didn't have to pay the big $$$ for a common type card. I'm happily unfocused, and try to have every purchase be a card that I like, rather than need, just for need sake. Being rid of the whole "set collecting" concept is happily liberating.

Thanks Leon! A topic right up my alley!

I've been the most happy collecting what I like/is appealing to me, rather than by set or type.

Wes,

Unbelievable Jack Johnson.

That set is incredibly tough and I love the fact it's a tobacco issue, but basically in the caramel style.

That's a keeper...unless you want to sell it.

I couldn't pass on this one. It appears to be a real N C Wyeth print. It may be trimmed. I have not removed the backing to check.

While I'm on the off-topic, is there a board out there like this one dedicated to prints and older art? I've tried to use the eBay Art board, total waste of time

Here's a CDV of Abner Doubleday, which I picked up just because I really liked it.
