Default Age of this baseball?

Posted By: David Smith

Hello,

I didn't want to hijack the other thread about baseballs, so I started this one.

I am in the process of winnowing down my collection (and getting some cash to spend on the cards I want to collect) and was wondering how old this ball might be? This is a Lowe & Campbell baseball in the original box. The box has a partial label attached which says, "Officail League No. 00 Baseball cushion cork center". Printed on the ball it says, Lowe & Campbell Athletic Goods", "Cushion Cork Center", "Official League Ball", "No. 00 Selected Horsehide 9 IN. 5 OZ.".

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

David

Default Age of this baseball?

They were a sporting goods company based in Chicago. Founded around 1920, they merged with Wilson Sporting Goods in 1931 but the brand name continued on until 1960. Judging from the graphics on your baseball box, I would guess that the baseball was made near the end of the company's existence, maybe in the late 1950s?
The company went out of business completely when one of their vaulting poles broke during a competition and critically impaled the teenager using it. They were sued and lost the case.
