Default 1917 Collins McCarthy Ty Cobb on Ebay

Three different bidders went after this card....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I'm no expert on this set, so other then the apparent thin stock and excess stain discoloration on the back side nothing about the card itself stood-out as a reprint. But a few red flags in his description did stand out. First of all, he knows that SGC exists (so "STRIKE ONE" for not having it graded). Secondly, he claims to "have this checked" - perhaps by his great grandmother(?) but placed the value at only $250 for what appears to be a Vg+ to Vg/Ex card ("STRIKE TWO"). Thirdly, fourthly, and fifthly...............great grandfather was the original owner ("STRIKE THREE"), misspellings ("STRIKE FOUR"), knows it's a Collins McCarthy and did not google its value ("STRIKE FIVE")!!!

Five strikes is a bit over my "Thomas Tusser" limit.

Lovely Day...

I saw the listing as well and figured this one was worth staying away. I bet that SGC label would have said "? Authenticity" if you scanned further to the right of it; hence the lack of showing the cert number or the whole flip...

Default scan?

It could just be the scan but the card looks a bit glossy to me. None of mine look that way.

The cut flip label is an obvious mistake if you're trying to cheat people. What a tool.

Default at least 30-40

I have owned at least 30-40 E135's. They can look a little shiny when tilted so that in itself didn't throw me off. The SGC flip did though....

The fact that it was shiny at an angle, plus the tiny paper loss on the back side, were two of the factors that this card had on the plus side. But when everything was taken into account, I just couldn't drink the kool-aid.

Lovely Day...

I think the one on ebay is a fake. Here's a real one:

1916 Collins - McCarthy E135

PS: is "great grandfather" the new "grandfather" on ebay listings of fake cards these days?

Jeff, that Cobb is awesome. Very nice centering.
Do you have a Joe Jackson like it?

Tony, thanks -- and I wish. There's a Jackson in H & S and it's incredible.
