Default T206 Wagner PSA 5 in Mastro Auction - Your Thoughts?

Posted By: Jeff S.

As many of you have probably noticed, Mastro has an ad on the back cover of the current Old Cardboard touting a PSA 5 T206 Wagner to be auctioned Aug. 1st. To my knowledge, this is the finest example to be publicly offered in years besides the Gretsky PSA 8. With that recent BVG 1 catching $317K+, any thoughts on whether this could break $1mill? It's a diamond cut, and noted as such with the (MC), but definitely a beaut. Nice to see a strong mid-grade for a change.

I have no affiliation with the card, its owner, or the auction house whatsoever.

No doubt, that card will break the $1 million dollar barrier once the juice is factored in.

I would be shocked if it did not break a million. My guess would be in the 1.3-1.5 range. But who knows with a card like this. It is the best to be offered in a long time.

I bet this card goes for $1.6-$1.8 w/ BP. The number of buyers for a card like this are few obviously, but with nothing close to this card being listed recently I see it selling strong.

Without seeing a scan, I say it will close under $1M ($925K). Leon - This hammer price would be a pretty cool board contest?

Who is the consigner?

What if some new influential collectors get involved? No telling what the price will be.

crap, just noticed Brian beat me to it.

I will estimate 1.5 million (picture Doctor Evil) dollars.

I would think Don Louchios would be a near certain and strong bidder. Likely the Dreiers are strong bidders. Perhaps Ireland and Spence as well as other "influential buyers".

Price with juice around $1.5mm.

Well thats the bigger question for Jim and/or Bruce to find out. Which "shark" is it that is selling this Wagner and getting out? Or was this owned by one of these lucky fellows that found it in the barn?

Is it appropriate to be naming names on a public chatboard? Maybe some or all of these collectors would prefer privacy.

No, I really don't think it's appropriate. But, I don't think they could get a name either.

Barry,

By listing your sets on the PSA Set Registry makes it public. The names I am mentioning are not big surprises--its who anyone that is knowledgeable about what is going on in the hobby would come up with.

Dave,

I don't know who the seller is--Peter do you know?

Jim

Don't most people list on the registry with a pseudonym and not their real name? It may not matter, but these collectors might not read the board, and they may find out second hand that they are being discussed. It's a privacy and security issue, too.

Most list their sets under their name or if the do not their real name ias widely known.

All influential collectors I know list their sets with their names.

Jim- fair enough, and that is one way to look at it.

But none of these collectors posts on the board, that's all. Is it possible to have anonymity and have sets on the registry at the same time?

Perhaps not, and maybe I am being too protective.

I think this Wagner is $1M easy. I'm going to say at least $2M with juice.

Gary Cypres does have a museum, and his collection is well known.

I just think there is something about naming names on a public chatboard that may cross the line.

Remember, there may not be a back door, because this card is part of their 2nd annual live auction at the ESPN zone Aug 1st in downtown Chicago (which I can't afford the $100 fee )

There are probably less than five Wagners known that would grade Excellent (I know I could look it up but I'm too lazy).

There is also a raw one that would likely grade Excellent. It has already been posted on this board.

"PSA-unknown" category shows 1 PSA 5 with only the Gretzky 8 higher

"PSA-Sweet Corp." shows 1 PSA 5Q with none higher

I was the high bidder last year in Cleveland at $192,000. I am holding the card in the scan. It now belongs to a collector in Japan. It will be interesting to see what this card sells for.

THe other PSA 5 is Scott Ireland's. It is listed on his T206 set in the set registry. I saw that one once before it was his and it is stunning.

I agree Barry that naming those names on a public chatboard is inappropriate even if a large number of collectors know who they are.

1- only one who should name a name should be the person themselves.

2- That is one nice card. Even though it is cut whopsided, bigtime. Agreed, it looks 'authentic'. Must be a hand cut one.

3- All of the influential collectors I know refrain from participating in any set registry, they don't use their own name, nor do they use some alias.

Well, one of thwe most interesting things on this message board to me is who is doing what and who may do what--particularly at the high end and how that impacts the PSA Set Registry. I don't see anything wrong with it and many times I learn who is doing what. For example, I did not know who owned the Wagner PSA 5s. That is important information to me. Also this guy that apparently owns all the slabs and the guy from Janus. Fascinating!
