On Saturday mornings, my mom goes to the garage sales with her friends. She bought an 1800s etching by the famous British artist William Hogarth for $3 (including frame and glass), because it looked interesting and she thought I might like it. It's not worth a fortune, but a fair chunk of change. She told me if the tag was $5, she wouldn't have bought it.

Though my vintage acquisitions were relatively humble this year, my best acquisitions in both vintage/modern were as follows:

Vintage: McQuillan T-206 cards with Brown Hindu and Lenox ad backs.

Modern: completing my 1970s Mike Schmidt O-Pee-Chee run of baseball cards in nice grade.

The Scott and Elliot Show is a tough act to follow, but.....

.....now that this thread made me go back and look, I had a wonderful year!

My favorite things were my first two N173s (Cross and Zimmer), my Koester Bread Jesse Burkett (thanks, Ted!), my 1871 Warren Studio Cal McVey (thanks, Scott!) and my first National (OK, that wasn't so hot).

If my wife finds out, 2004 might not be nearly as good!

The F****** obscenities weren't the F****** problem, it was your getting F****** angry to begin with.

I won't speak for Elliot, but I personally don't have a problem with anything you've ever said or done on the board other than the mind-reading trick you keep F****** up. I find many of your posts to be F****** hilarious, and I have understood all of them - usually witty, sometimes requiring more thought than many board members are willing to give, but seldom posted with intent to kill or even defame....except for the most recent ones about me...sadly, I will have to live the rest of my days known as "that guy who maliciously accuses people of selling things they love" (possibly my new ebay handle).



Julie, if you read a smirk into my smiley faces I'm gonna have to virtually slap you.

Hi all,

Here's a brief list of just of few of my favorite "finds" of 2003. Almost all of which came from eBay.

1. 3 1894-96 New England League Fall River Indians Cabinet photos (1 team, 2 individual)

2. 1885 New England Association Biddeford, ME team schedule (super condition and rare)

3. 1889 N172 Old Judge James McQuaid, Denver fielding pose G/VG (from Yahoo Auctions and it's actually real)

4. E94 Close Candy Devlin, N.Y. (Green Background)

5. 1896 Keith's New England League guide

6. Near-Mint hardcover copy of Before the Curse by Troy Soos

7. Pair of Good condition E102 "Set of 25" commons (Dougherty/Lobert) for about 40.00 (I thought that was a good price for a pair of E102's)

8. Quite a few N172's and T212's.

I'm hoping this coming year will bring lots of cool, new finds.

Vintage-related hi-lites of the year:

1) Great chats with board members in the evenings.
2) Early notice from Leon about his finds - great to share the excitement , if not the profit.
3) More non-ebay auction purchases than ever before. It has been great migrating away from ebay for my collecting needs.
4) Minor entry into Cuban collecting (1 card-yippee).
5) Re-building my "catcher gear" collection, this time to include only unique items - web-page forthcoming
6) Beautiful Player's League booklet schedule with all NL and PL team rosters.

it started off with a W555 Cobb (thanks Andy!)...

...and the overall highlight was an Allen & Ginter (A45, I think) DeWolf Hopper card...Hopper was the guy who made "Casey at the Bat" famous, and before seeing this card, I didn't even know he was on any.

I am curious as to just how much of an impact ebay has on our acquisitions. Of my list, I got 5 items on ebay and 7 from non-ebay sources. The 3 most expensive items came through ebay; the three cheapest were acquired in person or via mail order.

One of the more interesting items I bought was a group of boxing books that belonged to the famous old-time trainer Mannie Seamon (trained Joe Louis). On a front page of each book, he wrote his name and, in a column below, page numbers. At first, I had no clue what the page numbers referred to ... Turns out, the pages were where his name appeared. Everytime his name appeared in a book, he vigorously pen underlined it and wrote the page on the front page .... Proud of his accomplishements, it appears

Of my favorite items of the year, perhaps 83 percent were bought from non-eBay auction houses, the rest from eBay. A few of my favorites were obtained on eBay, but they were non-sport so went unmentioned on this thread.

had to wait till i actually had a couple of the cards before i responded.Didnt want to postally jinx myself. So some of my favorites from this year include.

1) finishing the entire team set from my favorite vintage team
2) buying 2 of the more expensive cards from my favorite set
3) just bought my favorite pose card ever which took almost 2/3rd's of my life to finally get from the time i first saw it
4)finally,5 more cards of my favorite player

I wouldn't classify these as "finds", really just my favorite purchases/trades for 2003.

1) My favorite would be N175 Gypsy Queen Jack Rowe - SGC 80 - thanks Jay Miller

2) I also cherish a difficult N172 Old Judge of Lady Baldwin - SGC 30

My Detroit Old Judge collection grew from 8 to 16 different cards during 2003. I'm far from finished though, hoping 2004 will be just as prosperous.

Finally got my unknown Kroger card today. I think its my favorite find of this year. The card looks 100% vintage in every way. Its exactly 2" by 3.25", medium stock. If anyone can provide any info on these cards, the hat John Riddle is wearing, or the Kroger Bread Co., Id appreciate it greatly. Thanks Frank
