Hi Jeff- I've always understood the Cobb portrait to be a Horner...

A quick google search produced several mentions of it, here's one:

I have never seen the actual Horner photo used for Johnson's portrait. Does anyone here have a copy? It sold at Christie's years ago. I contacted them to try to get a scan but they sent me to another company that wanted a ton of money just to send me the listing.

These do not list the photographer, but here are some T206 with the photos used to make them:

Here is the Horner of Johnson that sold in the 1996 Christie's sale. It sold for $3,450 against a $1,000/$1,500 estimate. I was the frustrated underbidder. It has not changed hands since the sale and currently resides in one of the top collections in the country.

Kevin! You are my hero! Thank you for posting that - what a great image. I had settled on looking at the M116.

That is not in my collection! Oh, sorry, I just noticed you said "one of the top," not "the" top. My bad.

What great Matty cabinets!! Thanks for showing them, Kevin. Horner is still the only thing on my office walls. Just ask Al C. who got a firsthand look recently....

Bryan, out of curiosity, who was the company that Christie's sent you to? Any recollection as to what they were charging?

I wish that they were mine. Unfortunately, all I have are images that I have collected over the years.

Would still like to see some definitive proof. Not saying it's not Horner, but auction descriptions aren't enough to convince me.

Here's my original Horner. Used to make the George Mullin T206 card.

Nice photo. Is that a stand alone photo or was it taken from a larger piece? I don't think anyone has done portraits better than Horner.
