Default Can anyone identify this Ruth card?

Posted By: JimB

I picked this up in a trade back in '79 when I was in Junior High. I can't remember if my friend said it was his dad's or his grandfather's. It is no earlier than 1936 since it mentions that Ruth was elected to the Hall of Fame. Any help identifying it would be great. Also, if you have an idea of its value, that would be nice too.
Thanks much,
JimB

Mark Macrae recently sold one as a Pacific Coast Publishing Co. card that was advertised in a 1948 magazine. You might contact him for more details or to make sure I remembered the name/date correctly.

Earlier discussion from Frank Ward

I also recall Jim Manos had one of these for sale a year or so ago and there was a good discussion on it.

Thanks for the tips. It is a busy day for me, but I will read that other thread later.

Jim,

This card was put out as a memorial to the Babe on his death in 1948, by the American Association of Professional Baseball Clubs. My copy of this card has at the bottom, below your last line, "Compliments of the American Association of Professional Baseball Clubs". On the front, in the lower right hand corner, it has AL313. It is listed in the 2007 SCD catalog.

John

FKW wrote in the other thread,
"BTW in case anyone doesnt know. These Ruth cards are from 1948 and are found in 2 variations. One has "Compliments of American Association of Professional Baseball Clubs" at the bottom of the back, while the other is missing this line and now is known to have been produced by the "Pacific Coast Sports Publishing Co." of L.A. The PCSPC cards were offered for 10 cents ea. in an ad (with picture) in the Sept. 10, 1948 issue of "Pacific Coast Baseball News" (a PCL Magazine). The PCSPC info in not yet known or published in the SCD Standard Catalog, yet the cards are listed on page 26 in the 2007 SCD.

The only other difference between the 2 variations is the style of the "R" in "Ruth" on the back."

I thought it would be good to post this info here as well.

That it was made by "Pacific Coast Sports Publishing Co." of L.A. makes sense since I was living in LA when I got the card - which came from a friend's father.
