Default OT -- 1970s Phillies Roster info needed

A good friend of mine is one of the Washington Nationals' lesser known coaches. He swears he was on the Philllies' 40-man roster some time in 1977 and/or 1978, as a pitcher, maybe only during Spring Training of each of those years.

I've been trying to help him find documentation of the Phillies' rosters during that period, sothat he can show the doubters that it was true.

So, can anyone direct me to a place/person who would have documents (Spring Training scorecards, media guides, etc.), that might show the 40-man roster of the Phillies in 1977 and/or 1978?

Thanks!!!

What's his name?

Let us do the work for you or do you not want to "out him" publicly?

Easy to find...

Default The Nat Coach is ....

Jose Martinez, the Nats Batting Practice Coach and all around amazing guy.... says he was on the Phillies 40 man sometime in 77-78, but no one can prove it, and he has a bet with several other bullpen and assistant coaches... any help would be greatly appreciated!

is that the Jose martinez that was a Cub's coach at one time??? If so I have to agree that he is a great guy! I used to work for the teams front office and had a chnace to meet him many times.

His claims of being on the Phillies seem plausible because, if he is the same guy that worked for the Cub's, Dallas Green brought ALOT of Philly people with him when he came to the Cubs in 1982. Front office staff, players even coaches came with him. So it would not seem to be a stretch that he may have had a sip of coffee with the Phillies during that time frame and came to the Cubs with the wave of Philly imports..

I might be ignorant on this subject but it seems to me if the guy WAS on the roster back in the day and he currently works for an opposing team in the same division as the Phillies, all he would have to do is go to the Philadelphia Front Office while the Nationals were in town and ask to speak to somebody there about the matter. They probably have all the records and could pull up as much info as the guy needed to PROVE he was once in their system and on their 40 man roster.

Working in the front office as I once did it actually mightnot be that easy to pull information up with the team. They dont always have a database of the people on their rosters during spring training especially from the 70's. Unless he was on the offical team roster records might not be available from back then. It would take someone having to contact the media relations department and have them do some research. But to be honest, if he is claiming to be on the regular season roster he would have showed up on many different websites that track this information. I suspect he might have been on the off seaso n 40 man roster or the spring training invitee list and not on the regular season roster.

Call the Phillies directly and ask for the media relations department. They should be able to research for you

The Jose Martinez in the list above that was in what I assume was high A ball at the time is not him?

Jose Martinez Peninsula A+

He was a pitcher and looks like he moved to AAA in 1979 so he conceivably would have been invited to spring training in 79 and maybe 78.

Need to check a Phillies Media Guide from the year or years in question. He may be in it and it will tell all about him. I think it may mention if he was on a 40 man roster etc. Ch

Looking at the information that has been presented here I think I have the wrong Jose Martinez who was the Cubs coach in the 80's. So please disregard my comments on that subject!! But if none of the other leads pan out that have been proposed here, do please contact the media relations department of the Phillies!

There are 1977 , 1978 etc Philadelphia Phillies Media Guides for sale on ebay right now for under $ 10. This may be a good lead.

I'll add this from my experience in the minor leagues, which might or might not be relevant:

An organization will add players to the 40-man roster (and AAA, AA, A rosters) during the off-season. Many of those players never will be on the roster they're assigned to in the winter by the time the season starts. I had teammates in Class AA who were added to Milwaukee's 40-man roster in the winter (for protection purposes to prevent other clubs from claiming them), and they knew they were going to be back in Double-A the next season.

So it's quite possible your friend might have been on the 40-man roster at some point but not the active 40-man roster that comes to most people's mind.

Great point Rob.
Websites such as baseball abstract will not show players on the 40 man roster during the off season so that is why the best way to go is to contact the team and have them investigate if this player was ever on the 40 man roster. This might be the best time of year to do it as teams really get ramped up after the Christmas holiday and they have little time to do these sort of things after then.
