Default 1963 Topps #173 variation

Can you imagine the discussion behind closed doors at Topps? LOL!

Or create your own frenzy of some kind.......what I do not understand about this card, is if Topps did enact a change to the image, why not just airbrush the bat completely away as they attempted to do with a card like the 66 Landrum?

IMO, it does not appear that Topps did make any changes to this card....possibly a DP or a variance in ink levels at printing caused these differences.

Larry--As I mentioned above, because there are so few of the ones where the bat is visibly obscured I tend to agree it was not an intentional change. But the small numbers also seem to argue against a DP. Not sure what it is. Maybe a Ripken white out after the fact change. I can not detect any alteration on the one I posted above. Maybe just a scarce print defect.

I totally missed that original thread about the 1963 #173 card.

But I did just pull out my 1966 set to see if I had all the Landrum cards, because I remember talking about that card years ago. The only one I have shows the button partially marked out. I better go get the others while I'm thinking of it.
