Just picked up this 1908 Seward Nebraska postcard...just pre-Nebraska State League days (many of these players had long careers in the NSL). Wondering if the guy in the front row appears to be African American to any of you guys?

1908 Seward team

1908 Browning of Seward Team

Dan:

Regarding the guy second from the right, I would say yes (although not conclusively). I have studied him about 10 times now, and 7 of the 10 times, he appears to be African-American. If I look any closer, I will get a migrane. But I would guess "yes".

Did a quick search of the name "Browning" with "Seward" on the newspaper archive and found his name only once. He listed in a boxscore as a catcher. Saw lots of references to the other names in the articles.

Could he be an Indian?

Thanks for the input so far fellas. If I may ask Bob, what newspaper archive are you using? Do you have a link?

Thanks!

Looks almost like a mix between a Native and African American.

But I really dont think we are supposed to be talking about this.

This is the one I used. It says Baseball but you can use it for other sports too. You need Adobe Acrobat. Have fun!

Thanks Bob!

edited to add: I did not know there were any newspaper archives on the net with the Lincoln paper in it. You have just saved me many trips to the local historical society. I can't thank you enough.

I remember a cartoon where a black kid shows up for a little league practice and says, "I was told this team was integrated. I don't see any girls."
