Default Question on collection cards from the 1960s

I am starting to get into the topps sets from the 1960s... looking for some advice if i buy ungraded sets.. is there alot of counterfeiting/ fakes in the 1960 cards? how can you tell if a baseball card from the 1960s is real or not? any tips would be appreciated..

thanks!

Default Counterfeits

If you want to avoid counterfeits, buy from a dealer you know, or one with a great reputation on this board or in the hobby. Greg Morris breaks a lot of raw sets on eBay.

In the 1960’s cards, if it’s a common it’s not likely counterfeit. Not that many in the 1960’s that are counterfeited except 1953 Rose RC, the Nolan Ryan RC, Mantles, etc,

Get yourself a few commons from that year to use as comparison. (Card stock, font, etc)

Agree with above. Once you've handled thousands, it becomes pretty easy to spot counterfeits. Alterations can be a little tougher to spot; however -trimming, color added, etc. Must like with any era card, the best method of detection is to compare with others from the same set. They didn't bring out special card stock for the stars - they're all printed on the same sheet so all have the same characteristics.

Most common counterfeits are obviously the highest dollar cards: any Mantle, major rookies - Clemente, Mays, Aaron, Rose (probably one of the most commonly counterfeited cards), Seaver, Ryan, etc.

When I was collecting the 1965 Topps set it was easy to tell the real one and the reprints apart. The real cards were colored blue on the back, the reprints were white.

I only bought graded cards, but if I was buying raw cards I would be more concerned with them being trimmed, especially the stars.
