Default T207 Davis - 'C' variations

Trying to get an idea as to relative population and value of the three variations of the Davis card:
  1. white 'C' on cap
  2. blue 'C' on cap
  3. brown 'C' on cap

Hey Scott,

Others can chime in as well with their opinions which may differ but...

When I was collecting the set, I didn't and still don't consider these to be variations. Just (subtle) printing flaws that create different colors on the C. Not like Lewis with/without an emblem or the Livingston variations for example that actually have something intentionally changed on the uniforms.

Default Davis c variations no longer in standard catalog

I just took note of these variations only to see that my standard catalog (2009 edition) has a statement within the T207 set description about no longer carrying them as a legitimate variation. I was hoping to see examples to judge for myself at this point. I don't personally own any examples yet.

Several years ago I convinced Bob Lemke to delist this and the Carrigan/Wagner wrong back's as "variations". The Davis is purely a result of inking/registration differences and the wrong backs are exactly that, error back of which other full or partial wrong backs exist, but not a part of the set.

Thanks everyone. I know very little about T207's, but acquired a brown 'C' and wasn't sure how to handle it as far as description and price.

Ron,

While I agree they are different, I do not think it was anything that was done intentionally, but just a result of different registration/inking. I have a couple that display different levels of color on the C, but they are not the bold blue that we find on other T207's that were intentionally printed with that color. Just my thoughts.

It's interesting though - you would expect other blue stuff to be out of whack in order to get the 'C' covered that much.

Also, I found an old post that theorized that the brown 'C' was the result of brown background ink smearing over the 'C';plausible, but you would expect to see brown 'smearing' on other cards in ways that wasn't so convenient. And if it's registration, you'd expect to see other parts of the brown off-kilter.

Just thoughts of an T207-untrained collector.

While I can't explain it either, I don't think there is any other Blue on the card to shift, or the Brown for that matter. That is one of the "bluest" ones I have seen, most are just a shade to two darker than the white should be, kind of a dirty "C".

Thanks, Scott. I just louped my brown 'C' and the entire 'C' is speckled brown, not smeared. I'll get a hi-res scan today and post in this thread.

Esoteric stuff, but kind of a break from the usual T206 print anomaly discussions

Default Blue C

Here's evidence of another Blue C Davis card:

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/.../2010/424.html.

The same REA lot in 2010 has a "Brown C" Davis card, but it seems to be mislabeled by PSA. The C doesn't look very dark on that one.

Granted it has some blue tint to it, but there is no other blue print on the card, nor do any of the Cleveland players have blue print. Other teams like St. Louis have blue logos and cap bills, ditto Pittsburg and Brooklyn. I can't see any color added to any other Cleveland cards where by it could have been omitted or added in error.

There does not seem to be a logical explanation, yet we see more than one example.

I have one and my good friend Ashby has one. I found a blue C on another player I posted here months ago too. I agree, something with the printing but a neat result for us to wonder about indeed.
