Default 1926-26 "Exhibit Style" Gehrig

I've always been confused about the distinction on this issue between the "plain" background and the "photo" background. Here's a nice one at REA graded as the plain background but I'd say this is the photo background.

I think the grading companies are all over the place on these. Isn't this the one on the left the plain background?

But then here's another one graded like the REA example.

PSA is notorious for mis-labeling these as plain background when they clearly are not.

The one on the left is, indeed, a plain background variation.

What Dmitry said.

I've always preferred the term "silhouette" to "plain" because it describes what was done to the image much better. I don't know why PSA messes up so readily on these because they really are quite distinctive

ETA: I recently bought this photo at auction because it reminded me of the card:

Thanks. Looks like SGC gets it wrong too. (I mean there's a 50/50 chance you'd get it right even if you had no clue. Sheesh.)

Those colors are amazing. How can you not love Exhibits (or Exhibits Style).

For the last year now, PSA uses a consultant on Exhibits. I know this gentleman and he is an expert on them. Pretty easy to tell the difference on all three versions from this series. Below are a couple of different Gehrigs to ad to the thread.
