Only thing missing from your Jim Brown collection is, well...Jim Brown himself. Great stuff.

One Hall of Fame member I've focused on is Steve Owen. Steve was a friend of my father and I met him several times when I was young. Here's a picture of Steve as a child - he's in the middle.

This is Steve's yearbook photo and yearbook autograph

Here's Steve's introduction as a new NY Giant in 1926

Here's his autograph on a team signed page from 1929

And a picture as a player in 1930

And 1931, when he also took over as Giants Head Coach

Now we are into his coaching career

In 1933 the Giants played the Bears in the first ever Championship playoff - here Steve signed the program

He had three covers in the Diamond matchbooks, this one from 1934

In 1934 the Giants won the NFL Championship in the famous Sneakers game - the team was given small football watch fobs, this is Steve's

Over the years there were many press photos of Steve as Coach

This was from his 25th Anniversary as Coach - a silver tea set

Steve got a card in the 1952 Bowman set

Steve was a favorite after dinner speaker

By 1953 the Giants were struggling and young players, like Frank Gifford, wanted Owen out, and he was "moved upstairs" The night before his last game he was on a television show and he's pictured here with his wife and my father - Steve is holding the game ball from the Sneakers Championship

Here is looking at the field from his office before the last game

Steve was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles

Then went on to coach in Canadian football, where he is also in the Hall of Fame

He eventually returned to the Giants where everyone thought he belonged - here is a book from his library signed by Earl "Greasy" Neale, sportswriter Frank Graham, Ken Strong and Elmer Layden - Strong writes "Still My Coach"

No, some confusion over that, especially when it comes to autographs. The Heisman winner was Owens, the Giants coach was Owen.

Mike and Showdawg - great thread. Showdawg, if you take requests, I'd love to see what you have of Marion Motley. I think I may have seen what looked like the original artwork to his 1950 Bowman cards in one of your pics. No rush though - please finish with Jim Brown first - I'm not trying to hijack.

Nice Jim Brown collection. I was wondering if you’ve ever seen this large Jim Brown action postcard from 1957 while on SU. It actually calls him out. I guess this would be considered a “pre-rookie”. I think it’s pretty cool and have never seen it.

That Syracuse postcard is awesome! I collect Gino Cappelletti, John Hannah, Andre Tippett and Tom Brady. I'll post my Gino collection in this thread at some point.

Beautiful stuff, Dan! I really like the way you have both a high grade card and an autograph one for so many different cards.

Very nice.

Great stuff! Really like the Jim Brown and Steve Owen collections. Thanks for sharing.

I was very fortunate to acquire the estates of Frank Hinkey's (Yale 4x All-American End from 1891-94) wife and nephew. I created an online virtual museum to display these wonderful football artifacts, which I try to update at least monthly throughout the year. The vast majority of this memorabilia has never been seen before. All of it will be donated to Phillips Andover in the future. Take a look when time permits.

Cheers!

Mark, that's great - this is turning into one of the best threads ever. So, Hinkey coaching Dayton wasn't like NFL teams hiring coaches, today? He just happened to live there and know the coach?

John,

Thanks for taking a look. Frank Hinkey helped coach the 1921 Dayton Triangles by the request of the head coach, Nelson "Bud" Talbott. Talbott helped organize the Dayton Triangles in 1916. Hinkey was the head football coach for Yale from 1914-15. His captain for the 1914 season was.....Bud Talbott. They remained close friends throughout the years. I have a fantastic letter from Bud Talbott sending his condolences to Frank's wife after his death in 1925. I'll post it on the website next month.

Mark

Thanks Mark!

Jeff,

Those Hinkey photos are great. The 1894 Mayo card is beautiful! I was unaware he was your favorite player from the 1800s. Most prefer Walter Camp or Pudge Heffelfinger. I'm glad I am not the only one.

Always a treat to see pieces of your collection.

Camp is obviously an icon and Heff was the first documented professional but neither of them are a 4x All-American ;-)

It was a hard decision to sell off most of my 19th Century material but the one player I kept was Harry Beecher, so I guess he is my favorite. I don't have a real player collection but I do have a Beecher family collection - first the football stuff

Now to his great-Aunt - a signed photo

And a first edition

And I don't have a scan for this, but I do have an autograph and a cabinet for his grandfather

Great Beecher stuff, Mike M! Been after that Yale photo for a long time with no luck. Love that image!

And awesome Brown team photos, Adam. We could rename this entire thread the Jim Brown showcase at this point LOL.

Default Steve Van Buren

I’m very happy to finally add the Bread For Health card to my Steve Van Buren player set. It was a long process to get it graded (I was happy to get a number grade - I even got a bonus for having one of the 3 highest graded) and then actually have my request to add the card to the set fulfilled by PSA.

These bread labels don’t come up often, especially not as singles, but I was able to acquire one because Jeff was willing to help me out and part with an extra. Thanks Jeff. I appreciate it - I know this is one of your favorite sets. Here’s a link that shows images of all the cards: https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...timeset/229788

Congratulations on the Van Buren! No surprise that it came through Jeff, he's one of truly great people in or out of this hobby.
