Default Photos used for book covers

Ben's recent Ruth Conlon photo and book post got me thinking about this. Anyone have any to share?

Here's one by a forum member:

Here is a 1937 Type I photo of Johnny Vander Meer that also happens to be the cover photo of James W. Johnson's great 2013 Vander Meer biography entitled Double No-Hit- Johnny Vander Meer's Historic Night under the Lights.

OK...I'll play. A quick search on google for "Ruth book" and "Gehrig book" yielded me a few. I will start there as they(Ruth and Gehrig) are the clear focus and meat and potatoes of my collection. MMmmmmm meat and potatoes...

Some of the photo selections on many of these books amaze me. Not in a good way. The one where the burke dodgers image was chosen but "they" "photo shopped"a yankee cap.. really?? Out of all the great images.. you needed to do that? Also.. some of the books that came up were of images I wouldn't even think to put on a cover. I wonder if there were chosen out of bad taste or trademark stuff dictated.
Magazine covers would be another great topic/thread.
Anyways, here are some I found quick and yes.. my taste is the best.

Haha. Ben, I should have figured with you having the best Yankee photo collection on the planet, they would be the ones used for book covers.

Fan-tastic!

Hi Scott,

I assume you are just collecting these and not reselling? Are you aware that anything before 1923 is in the Public Domain is open to selling but after that is restricted based on the owner of the photo. Just checking. Great idea and cool photos.

What does reselling images have to do with anything in this thread? The collectors here are showing prints that they own, which they are certainly allowed to re-sell.

It's interesting how they doctored that photo to make it look like it was taken during a night game.

Yeah, and the photo itself is actually from spring training in 1937, not 1938 the year that Vander Meer had his historic night under the lights.

As a book collector, this is a cool thread. I'd really love to see some paintings used for book covers. Paintings were routinely done for covers before 1940, and there are hundreds of books that are illustrated as such. I've only seen one painting that was used, and it will never leave the collector's hands.

I'll start a separate thread for the paintings, but keep the photos coming.
