In my case, as I was collecting mid-70's Topps as a teenager, my father would alway tell me "I wish I knew what happen to my baseball cards - I'd let you have them". When he went away as a young man to the South Pacific in WWII his parents moved from one house to another in Lorain, Ohio. During the move his mother did something his card collection and there given up as lost. One day during the summer on 1974 he called me home and as I walked in the door to our house my father and older brother were sitting on the floor in the living room sorting through between 300 - 400 cards from 1933 to 1936 Goudey sets, Tattoo Orbits, Delongs, Diamond Stars, Indian Gum, and Tarzan - Crystal Vault of Isis cards. Seems my aunt was cleaning out the detached garage at my granparents house and found a cardboard box containing his collection up in the rafters where it had been exposed to all the weather changes for over 30 years. The cards had survived remarkably well and even yeilded the 1935 Goudey Ruth shown below. Not bad for all the temperature / humidity changes it had to see.
Over the years I've sold almost all the non-sport cards and have upgraded many of the Goudey's, but this event coupled with the love of the game and it's history started me on my prewar collecting journey.
As far as other "finds", I know for sure that they do occur. One of the guys that used to work for me owned a farm house that was built in the second half of the 19th century and had a series of modification through the years. He purchased it in the early 80's and was doing some renovation work in the kitchen and while removing a portion of a plaster and lathe wall found 8 Old Judge cards inside the wall including a Clarkson. Knowing that I collected cards (which he didn't do) he brought them in to ask me what they were. Nice shape (although slightly curled) for being hidden away for 100 years! Never could talk him into selling them to me.
