A New Dazzy Vance "Rookie" card
Picked this one up recently...I knew as soon as I saw it that it had Dazzy on it, but got the approval from Mark F. before posting it here...it passed the ear test. This is either 1912 or 1913 Superior...I've been trying to match up faces with Spalding Guide photos, but the Superior photos in the Spalding's are horrible.

Dazzy
Nice find. Dazzy has such a distinctive face. It appears he was one of those "young but looks old" type of guys.

Great find. He kinda looks like Sterling Holloway, though you probably have to be a big fan of old movies to know who he was. I think he was the voice of Winnie the Pooh.

He does look like Holloway...Right away when I first glanced at this postcard my eyes gravitated right to Vance. Straight shoulders and that face that looks like an old man...he was only 21 or 22 years old here. And while researching this I found an error at Baseball Reference which I believe is updated by SABR members.
Dazzy Vance did not play for York in 1912...in fact he never played for York so I'm not sure why they have it listed that way. http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=vance-001cla

According to baseball-reference.com he was with Superior in 1913 and went 11-14.

Great picture. Love the guy in the straw boater hat behind the chicken wire.

So let's see. We have Sterling Holloway who looks like Dazzy Vance and William Bendix who played Babe Ruth. Everything comes full circle to baseball.

Baseball Reference has Dazzy with York in 1912 but I am pretty sure he was with Superior in 1912. I have most of the summer newspapers from York and from Superior in 1912 and he appears regularly in the Superior box scores and does not appear in the York box scores. He is also referenced in a few stories as being a Superior player.

FWIW, my 1958 edition of The Sporting News Daguerreotypes shows Vance having played for a "Red Cloud" team in 1912.

pat butram?
I think you guys un-earthed a real gem. I think the photo is Pat Buttram who played Mr. Haney on Green Acres and was Gene Autrey's buddy!
I might be wrong, so I'm hoping for a visual confirmation! Thanks, Bill Hedin bh3443@gmail.com |

Kevin, Red Cloud was only in the Nebraska State League for one year 1910.
Various towns had the option to "go dry" in the fall of 1910. When Red Cloud went dry support for the team dried up (pun intended) and the franchise moved to York Nebraska in 1911. http://www.nebaseballhistory.com/ is a link to my Nebraska Minor League baseball history site. |
