1968 Topps Game Coloration

Does anyone collect 1968 Topps Game cards? I think some of these are really cool looking with the closeups and player expressions. What I’m noticing though is that the coloration of the card (from white to faded yellow) does not seem to impact the grading nor the pricing of these cards. To me there seems to be much more eye appeal to the gleaming white background that really pops and are obviously better preserved. Especially for cards that the corners really don’t matter you’d think there would be an even bigger premium on coloration. Do people just not care that much because it’s a novelty set?

I also have loved them. Great little set packed with star power. Are you aware that they where once sold as a set in a box of all 33 cards. The box can be found as 10 cent and 15 cent versions. The box is quite rare.

There is an old thread on CU, Scott might remember it. Guy said he had thicker and whiter game cards. Posted some scans of different colors and tried to show thickness scans but they were inconclusive. I have the two boxed sets and an insert set. I am pretty sure there were color differences from the get go.

I know nothing about how graders do anything they do.

Thanks Al, Nice to hear from you and interesting link. It’s crazy to me that the complete set can go for as little as $130 in pretty decent shape. While I’m tempted, seems like a fun project to build one by one (although likely 5x as expensive).

I've been putting these together in cheap low grade as a small side project lately. It looks to me that there are two different stocks, but the brighter white cards are susceptible to aging. I can't notice a thickness difference in any of mine though


I'm not a fan of grading, but it always strikes me as odd than in most sets fading and image don't seem to impact any of the grading judgement. Old Judges are the ones that really stand out here, with cards faded so bad it's hard to see the image still able to receive strong grades.
