Default question for mvsnyc and other T206 experts on southern league

Posted By: fessgreg

Hello: I am interested in the sgc 88 sid smith t206 southern leaguer for 20k being sold by bmw. How much of a premium do southern leaguers go for? There is a psa 9 unknown back(that's how its described on the psa website) out there. What do they mean by unknown backs? The sgc 88 is an old mill back. Do they go for more? What do you people think the card is worth? it is on ebay. signed fessgreg

PSA only recently started tracking the backs of T206 cards (maybe 1 year or so ago they started), so "unknown" simply means that one was graded before they started tracking so their computer database does not know what back it is. It's probably an Old Mill or Piedmont back. 20k strikes me as expensive for that card.

I would guess a southern leaguer in a psa8 or sgc 88 would more likely be $3500-5000 imo.

I dont know the specific value of the card, but dealers often price cards a good 20% or more then what they are worth when they list BINs. 20 k seems like a steep price for that card, very steep.

Sid Smith appears to be a tougher Southern Leaguer in the T206 set. This card with an OLD MILL,
or PIEDMONT 350 back is semi-tough.

With a brown HINDU back, Smith is very tough. But, 20K for this card is (irregardless of condition
or back) is quite unusual.

These guys have told you about right...

1- 20k is too much to be paying. Only reason to pay that is that you have 46 or 47 of the other southern leaguers all in SGC 88 holders, lack this one, and this may well be your only shot at getting it. With 20k you could get close to buying Ford Motor Company stock and voting yourself onto the Board.

2- unknown probably means that it is not known. Which most likely would be Old Mill or Piedmont, 'cause if it was Hindu they'd be crowing about it.

3- Sid Smith would be encountered slightly less often in the white border tobacco cards... but he's not rare.

4- And I'd think that Old Mill on the back of a southern leaguer would be deemed a common back. Gotta have something on the back, and most are Old Mill or Piedmont. A handful will be Hindu, and they are difficult to find and obtain.

I sold a PSA 8 Fritz about a year ago for $3,000 +/- and the New Orleans players are pretty tough.

I sold a PSA 9 Dutch Revelle with an Old Mill back about 2 years ago for a good bit less than $20k.

nice card but priced way too steep.
with a Hindu back might think a fourth to a third of the price is ok.
notably, his handle is bmw and mine at best would be buick.

best,
barry

The last two recorded sales (VCP) for Sid Smith were:

$3,286.80 - SGC 84 (10/3/06) Lipset Auction
$4,750.00 - PSA 7 (8/7/06) eBay

An SGC 88 T206 Sid Smith (a very low population card and one of the tougher Southern Leaguers) is going to sell for an amount in excess of these figures. Generally speaking, the multiplier for NM-MT Southern Leagues is between 2 and 5 times the NM price.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my post. I learned a lot about t206 unknown backs and southern leaguers. As far as the price goes I think its a 12/13k card. I checked the 7's sold in the auction and the prices are correct, however there is a psa 9 out there so the card is not a 1 of 1. Feel free to post again with your comments. signed fessgreg

Hi Michael,
I tend to agree... I have sold 5-6 low pop Southern Leaguers in the last year and most were in the $4000 to $5000 range. Prices have been stale since November, but I think prices will pick up soon. I still have 3-4 8's or maybe 8.5's around, but I won't be selling them anytime soon.

Be well Brian

Tough to price IMO. There appears to be only 1 SGC 88 and no PSA 8's (there is a PSA 9 NQ and PSA 9 w/ Qual.).

GEORGE: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. It's from that grapefruit that Jerry squirted at me.
ELAINE: You're eye still hurts?
GEORGE: Yeah, yeah. You must have squirted a piece of pulp in it too.
JERRY: Pulp couldn't make it across the table.
GEORGE: Pulp can move, Baby! Why didn't you eat a real breakfast?
