Who is in this picture? (Two boxers and two baseball players...)

Can anyone identify the people in this picture? My mother gave me this picture as a birthday present in the early 1980's. At one point, I knew who all of these people were, but over the years I have forgotten some of them. I'm pretty sure that two are baseball players and two are boxers. I know for sure who one of the baseball players is and I think I know one of the boxers. The picture was probably taken around 1970, give or take a few years.

Can you identify these four people?

Though a couple of others look familiar, I can only give you the easy one. The guy on the left is Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champ.

I made a phone call a few hours ago to the person from whom my mother got the picture. He reminded me who all four people are. So, you guys got three out of four of them correct. Not too bad.

Here's what we know:

Far left: Jack Dempsey
2nd from left: Lefty Grove
2nd from right: Lefty Gomez
Far right: ???

I'll give you a hint or two regarding the guy on the far right. He is the other boxer. He shares his first name with a famous character on The Andy Griffith Show. (I am also a big fan of the Andy Griffith Show.)

Steve, It's definitely not Killebrew. I have a photo of Killebrew at this same event and while he is just as bald as the guy in this photo he is nowhere near as old. I'm pretty sure he's an oldtime baseball player, but I just can't figure out who he is.

The answer is Floyd Gibbons. I don't know how well he is known. I searched the web for a few minutes, but couldn't find much of anything on him. I was trying to find a picture of him in his boxing days...

I was gonna guess Floyd the barber on the far right and obviously the man sitting with the lady at the banquet is Merrill Stubing Captain of the Love Boat!

I do not think it is Braddock....but, I might be wrong.

Incidently, I HIGHLY recommend the movie "Cinderella Man" about
James J. Braddock's life. Russell Crowe should have been nomin-
ated for an Oscar. The fight scenes are the best I have ever
seen in a Boxing movie and the true life story is really great.

I don't know the Floyd Gibbons mentioned above, but a better educated guess is Tommy Gibbons who fought Demsey in Shelby Montana. I am not positve, but I think I have seen that picture before and I am pretty sure it is Tommy Gibbons

I guess it could be Tommy Gibbons instead of Floyd Gibbons. Floyd Gibbons is the name written under the picture that is displayed in Grove's home town of Lonaconing, MD. I will have to search the net to try to find a picture of Floyd Gibbons and Tommy Gibbons.

A few minutes ago, I received email confirmation from Tim Gibbons, a grandson of Tommy Gibbons, that indeed the man on the right side of the picture above is Tommy Gibbons. Tim's email is posted below.

Thank you for you email. Yes, I would say the person on the far right with certainty is my Grandfather boxer Tommy Gibbons. My Grandfather died in 1960. The picture would have to be toward the later part of my Grandfather's life. My Grandfather and Jack Dempsey were great friends their whole lives, long after the Dempsey-Gibbons fight in 1923 so it doesn't surprise me that they would be together in this picture. If I am wrong, I would be very surprised. There should be pictures of my Grandfather in his later years on our web site that should be able to verify this. I am guessing that is your web page with the picture so there is no point in replying to the web page as who the person on the right is. I hope this helps.
