if people collected bicycling cards, track&field cards, they'd be doing the same thing. If they collected futbol cards, they'd be checking off floppers, chest head-butters, racists, and steroid users as well. It is not just baseball, but all sports and society. Let's not put all the blame on baseball players.

King,

I don't believe that anyone feels that baseball is the only sport with athletes abusing drugs. Unfortunately MLB ignored the drug problem far longer than most of the other high profile sports. The general public's response, whether justified or not, is that baseball is haven for drug abuse (that until recently was tolerated by MLB). Simple math, home runs sell tickets.

I was in Italy when the Italians won the World Cup, so the papers were full of the outrage over Zidane's flagrant infraction against Materazzi.

But right there, amongst all the glorious headlines, were articles about game fixing that got three teams banished from the premier divison with no hope of reinstatement for three years.

Sports has problems all over the world.

I find it funny that everyone says baseball ignores their drug issues, and yet no one looks at college and professional football, where lineman are now considered small if they are under 330 and slow if they dont run a sub 5 second 40. Compare that to the size and speed of players at the same position just a couple decades ago and there is no way that the increases are not chemically enhanced...

It would be naive to believe that the NFL does not have steroid problems. However, steroid abuse is an issue of perception. The NFL has had an active anti-drug policy for at least fifteen years. That policy was crafted by the NFL without prompting from outside sources. That does not necessarily mean that it has been or is effective. Joe Fan believes that the NFL is trying, wheras MLB appears reluctant (until very recently) to legislate and/or enforce anti-drug policy.

The NFL has a HGH problem.

----------
Last week, Upshaw emphatically opposed blood testing of his players for HGH, saying there was no reliable test. What was more shocking, though, was his assertion that even if there was, he would oppose it.

“When you start talking about coming in to take a person's blood, that's different than taking someone's urine,” Upshaw said with somewhat fractured logic. “I know personally I would have a problem with someone coming in and trying to take the players’ blood. I'm not ready to make that leap.”

At around the same time as Upshaw's comments, the NFL issued a statement through league spokesman Greg Aiello reiterating its belief that there is no reliable test yet for HGH.

“We have no current plans to implement blood testing, and we have concerns about the reliability of the blood test that currently exists,” the statement read.

The only thing that they keep getting NFL players on is Narcotic use. Pot and Coke definately... again entirely different drug test than looking for HGH and Steroids. I remember in the mid 80's when WIllian "refridgerator" Perry was the biggest thing around... and now he would be considered a mid-sized player. Even Looking at the "Steel Curtain" from the 70's, none of those guys were over 300 pounds... hell, I think 2 of them were under 250.

The NFL keeps suspending players for smaller (yes illegal) drug charges so that we think that they aren't turning a blind eye to the real problem...

like attacking a different country so the world forgets about how badly the US screwed up in the first country they attacked... it's misdirection
