E136 Home Run Kisses unique Black & White- thin stock

Here is my fave pick up at the National. It came from an old time dealer who brought it up there for me. It is on "thin" stock, but not paper, and is black and white. If it were just a color difference I would call it a print variation. If it had crosshairs and no name I would call it a proof. It also doesn't have the trademark "pallet" on the back. I will call it a prototype for now as I can't think of another name. I guess you know you are a collector when you still get that "tingle" down your back on a pickup that you really like. This one gave me a tingle. There is also a regular one to see the differences. I already had it.....best regards

Definitely looks earlier than the standard issue. Doesn't look as aesthetically nice, so maybe they felt the same way and recolored it. Just a guess.

Nice meeting you in Anaheim. I know you showed me that card, but I didn't look closely. Is the surface or gloss the same on yours and the "regular" issue? Have you seen a regular Shinn to confirm it's the same pose?

Pardon my ignorance, but could it be possible that your card lacked a final processing step, one that changes a card from black and white to sepia? Or is the stock too different? Very nice piece in any event.

It was nice meeting you too at the show. The card is on different card stock altogether. Mark Macrae and others don't think it just missed a printing process as the paper/cardboard is too different. The card does have a weird gloss to it, not like on regular HR Kisses. It's like a clay coating of sorts..The back is not bleed through either. It was most likely on a stack of others and the ink rubbed off, so I am told......best regards

Hi Leon:

I knew I had seen your card previously. If you check page 30 of Issue #17 in The Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector, you will see the card before it was slabbed.

Thanks Patrick....I was told that it was sold in an auction some time ago. (several years maybe) and the owner had just got it back in a trade. When I first saw the scan it had that minimum bid and I thought that was the price on it. I was wrong ......I wish it would have been. regards

ps....I got it from the "King" part of the auction duo as it was Colabella and King Auctions....

Glad I could add something to the conversation.

The Home Run Kisses should also have the ACC designation of E136.

Lew Lipset mentions in The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, "There has always been some confusion in the American Card Catalog designation for Zeenuts. Burdick classified the Collins-McCarthy cards as E136 and E137, with the 1911-1914 Zeenut issues and the 1912 Home Run Kisses falling into the E136 designation and the balance of the Zeenut issue assigned to the E137 number."

Sorry to digress, but this is not too far from a discussion of Home Run Kisses- has anyone noticed the similarity in design between 1911 Zeenuts and Big Eaters, another 1911 issue? I know I could have started a new thread but Home Run Kisses are sorta Zeenuts-like anyway.(edited to correct that the typeface is not identical, but style is).

A recent D310 (another 1911 set) lot on ebay included the seller's comment that the card "looks exactly like an oversized Zeenut"...

Hi Steve:

I started putting together a virtual library of some of my favorite sets last year. Although I actually only collect catchers, which is my collecting focus, I, nevertheless, appreciate sets such as 1911 Zeenuts, 1912 Zeenuts, 1912 Home Run Kisses, T4 Obak Cabinets, and Old Mill Cabinets.

It allows me the ability to save my money for a very small group of cards, and the library keeps me interested during the slow times of the year.
