This was done on an individual basis as well as groups of dealers going from town to town - advertising that they were buying baseball cards. From what I understand, they would bring home suitcases full of cards. In the 80's, I would run ads in the local retirement communities newsletters looking for cards.

1980 would have still been a good year to put an ad like that out.
Ten years later you’d have found yourself with a lot of 1988 Donruss commons on your hands.
