Default Bartell George Burke Items

Posted By: Rhys

I picked these items up from the Dick Bartell estate. There were four all together but his Daughter in Law wanted to keep two for herself. They are original George Burke photo fronts professionally die cut and attached to bevelled wood backs and then attached to a Burke Stand with the stamp on the bottom. In 15+ years of collecting I have never seen anything like them and was wondering if Burke just custom made these for Dick Bartell or if they did similar things for other Ball Players.

I've got one of Pete Fox that I picked up on ebay a while back. They are very cool items.

I saw two large cardboard boxes filled with extremely similar items at an auction in Wilmington, North Carolina. However, I can't recall them being stamped on their bottoms. I also remember there being a few of actresses. No matter the subject, they were very well done and seemed nearly flawless.

At the time, I was under the impression that the ones I was looking at were homemade, maybe by a grandfather for a grandchild. Looking back, i'm not 100 percent sure.

Rhys,

I have one of a Cleveland Indians pitcher (I think Willis Hudlin, but I'm not positive) that I picked up about 10 years ago. I was buying a bunch of Indians stuff from a dealer by mail, and he described it over the phone, saying "I'm not sure what it is, but you can have it for $15." I figured what the heck and was thrilled when I received it. I always thought the that base was simply a piece of a picture frame, which led me to believe they weren't mass produced.

I'll double-check exactly which player I have and post a photo later this weekend.

Nice pick-ups.

Rob

George Burke made these specifically for ballplayers and others associated with the game. I have seen many of them over the years and every one of them has come from a ballplayer's estate or a family member. Just in the past year I have seen one for the Cubs legendary stadium announcer Pat Pieper, one for a minor leaguer who played for the Fort Worth Cats and a couple from the estate of another player whose name escapes me right now, but a ton of his stuff hit the market this last year....Yankees guy??? They are interesting, but I have never seen one go for big money. Always in the $30-$50 range.

Neat items, I'd not seen them before. Sort of a cross between a photo and sculpture.

The significance is that the stamp is on the base itself, showing that Burke made it-- as opposed to someone else later making it from a Burke photo.

I have seen a few and they have all come from players estates. All were mounted to similar pieces of wood.
