Default New discovery of Old Mill Double Bars Overprint Back

Posted By: Scott B.

It is nice to hear we keep on hearing new discovery in our hobby. This new discovery can fill a hole of a serious t206 back collector's wantlist.

The strange thing with this screwup missprint is the others Ive seen (single and double) are printed in red, not black.
The red one is a Sweet Caporal overprint mistakenly printed on a brown Old Mill back. (The double had the sheet flipped and then reprinted)

Makes no sense to have red and black ones. I smell a fake

They are all fakes and not worth a dime. I am ready to buy all of them.

Don't let Kevin S. reads this thread. He would say this kind of overprint variations are easy to replicate in his "lab" since he can basically build a t206 card from scratch.

What I find interesting is that this double overstrike card was part of a large Old Mill-only find. This would seem to suggest that the card was distributed in an Old Mill pack--and is not mere printer's scrap.

Scot- i said that very sentence to Scott Levy yesterday...very interesting...obviously the family's ancestor smoked old mill, and saved the cards from the packs, including this one.

Hi Dan!

sounds cool, Dan...i just looked the dates up, and i might be overees then, BUT if not, then i'll definitely come, and i'll bring my T206 binder...it pales in comparison to yours, but i think you'll like where i'm going with it.

ok, sorry to "hog" this thread...carry-on with the elusive overprints!

Hi Dan, The scans are just in my scan collection I dont know who owns the cards. The only other time Ive seen them is in the Lipset book, but the pictures are B&W so I never knew the overprint was red until the scans showed up a few years ago.

You have me beat, Ive only seen the 3 in this post and the Lipset book 2.

I assumed they were all red until today

That is wild Frank! I have never heard or seen of a red one and the back variation has always been referred to as the Old Mill with black bar. Are we sure your scans are accurate and that someone just didn't make the bars red in the scan to highlght them? Just a thought, Dan.

The other oddity if I remember correctly is that the known Old Mill double overstrikes are brown Old Mills, not blacks. Of course brown Old Mills and double overstrikes are all oddities, so who knows?

The red bar scans are from 2 different sources and a few years apart. I dont think they are doctored.

The Greminger card (1 red bar) is the exact same card pictured on page 51 in Lipsets book.

Very interesting

I never heard of a brown old mill having a bar. I only know of a few brown old mills in existence. This is neat stuff!

The single red overprint Greminger was won at a Lew Lipset auction a number of years ago. I went after this card only because it was different; that it was also brown printed only came to light after it was received. I seem to recall a member of this board emailed me soon after I posted the card scan and mentioned he had a double red overprint card. Louis
