Default Newbie question about T202 side panels

Posted By: Paul

Hope this isn't too rookie a question ...

What is the value of detached side panels (or for that matter, center panels) from triple folders? Does anyone collect these? And do any of the big grading companies accept them?

Thanks very much for any guidance you can offer.

Paul

legitimate grading companys do not grade these. i think they are worth very little (actually worthless) but i have seen them sell. i do not know if the buyers of these card parts are clueless or just want to pick up a piece of a vintage card.

Paul,

I do not believe that the grading companies will grade the side panels. Technically they are damaged pieces of a larger card. I have seen nice looking Cobbs command around $200, while Mathewson, Johnson, and Young usually grab between $50 to $100. Joe Wood, probably due to absence in the T205 set (and his popularity amongst collectors) often reaches $100. I have never really tracked the common players but I coul not imagine them fetching more than $10.

I know that many don't appreciate the "parts" of T202's when they've been separated, but they're still a heckuva lot nicer than most strip cards, and they have value in my eyes.

Default Newbie question about T202 side panels

Posted By: Jason L

I did it once, but I didn't inhale.
honestly, I bought individual pieces of the 3 segments just because I thought it would be a neat little type card collection...I bought 2 sides (one is a HOFer) and a center panel, and put together my own unique card.

I wont do it again though...just a one time thing.
embarassing.

Default Newbie question about T202 side panels

...George McBride T202 side panel in a private collection. I have a scan of it in the Signed T202 Gallery on my website, if you're interested in seeing it. That one commands somewhere around $200, I would guess.

Default Newbie question about T202 side panels

Posted By: Geno

I love T202 side/middle panels! I find that it's a cheap way to build sets, although 98% of the guys here will disagree that it "counts." I'm a collector, not an investor and love to read the backs of cards and check out the stats. On the middle panels, I love the way the catchers stand, the way the bases look, etc. I know I'm in the minority, but we can't all afford PSA graded cards. I'll leave the PSA Mint cards to the elitists in the world - I just love the feel of old cardboard, so send any of your "worthless" cards to me!

As far as value, commons are worth about $5-10, HOFers about $30ish, Cobb goes for about $100-$150 (way overpriced, but it does sell for that).

In my opinion, cards are meant to be enjoyed and traded, not stuffed into plastic for the rest of their lives. If I was an investor, I'd think differently, so I'm glad there are cards for both of us. I recommend reading a book about Matty's days and then looking at those side panels again - they will come to life!

Take Care,
Geno

Default Newbie question about T202 side panels

Posted By: Frank Wakefield

If what you want is all graded cards in your collecton, steer clear of the individual side panels.

Otherwise, it is an affordable way to collect vintage cards of some of the great players of the time. Some kids tore the T202s apart, and then collected the parts. I think that's okay now.

Some guys collect hubcaps. Or hood ornaments. Some guys collect old cars, and only want entire cars... The car collectors are annoyed that hood ornament collectors make acquiring them difficult. They don't see that the hood ornament collectors actually preserve a market for the hood ornaments. While hood ornament collectors don't have space or money for entire cars... neither are nuts. Both are right.

Collect what you want.

I believe some collectors buy the individual pieces of T202's (side panels and middle sections) and put the pieces back together to accumulate a cheaper T202 set. Not a bad idea considering the prices these days.

When Dennis says they are worthless, but they sell, it reminds me of Yogi Berra's line - "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded..."

Take Care,
