Question-How to store and display graded cards

I was wondering if there are any products that can neatly display graded cards in pages placed in large notebook. Were the MJ Roop books the only product out there???

I use these binders by light impressions. They are great quality and they allow you to engrave the binders.

Those albums shown above are essentially identical to Roops binders. Here are a few of mine in some Roop albums - the slabs are in ultra pro 4 card sheets. They are perfect size for sgc (though I use a small bit of scotch tape on the two top cards to ensure they cant slide out - barely noticable in the upper left corner of each of the top cards). The sheets dont work as well for psa or gai slabs.

The ultra pro pages shown by Richard and in the 2buds link provided above will only hold psa and gai slabs (they also make similar sheets that will fit BGS cards). They are rigid and very thick so you can only get 4 pages, if I recall correctly, into a 3 and 1/2 inch binder. They are also fairly expensive (about $36 for a box of 10).

The 4 page sheets that I use (shown above) hold sgc slabs very nicely. They are not rigid and not nearly as thick. As a result, you can get about 10 pages into a 3 and 1/2 inch binder. Also much cheaper - $17 for a box of 100. Here are the ones I use for SGC: http://www.the2buds.com/supg4.htm

Steve - very cool framed display. Can you tell me what size pictures that frame is made to hold? Also, did you do anything special to insure that they would not slip out of the matte or is it a tight fit?

The frame has a glass front. Next comes the grid. The slabs fit right into each slot. Then comes the backing cardboard that holds the slabs in nice and tight when the cardboard back is affixed to the back of the frame. It has hangers in the back so it can be hung on a wall. Nice thing about the display is that it isn't permanent. Takes probably a minute to remove the cardboard back, change out cards, and replace the backing.

I'm going back to Target this week and pick up a few more.

Josh did a good job explaining the graded slab pages. 4 slabs per page. Pages are made from somewhat rigid plastic and Ultrapro makes them for BGS and PSA slabs. The GAI holders can fit into PSA slab pages, but they are a very tight fit and need to be forced in/out.

In the largest binder that MJ Roop used to offer (I think 4") you can fit 6 slab pages which is 24 slabs.

The only other binders that I have ever found that can fit slab pages are the Ultrapro binders shown above. I do not believe that they offer them anymore.

Hey Jeff - The first impressions binders, I believe, are identical to what MJ Roop used to offer. Did they do the "baseball players" on the cover as well or did you get that done elsewhere?

Also, I see you've got psa cards in what appear to be the same 4 card sheets that I use for sgc cards. What do you do to keep them in the sheets since those sheets are a little big for psa slabs?

I just had to try this...
Target in my area has a few left.They are $20.

SCG fits nicely, but I am having to mess with the card in the middle the most...seems as though when you turn the little fixtures to hold the backing in place, the cardboard "bows" a bit in the center and the center card doesn't fit snug

My Lajoie is drooping

It doesn't look like Steve has that same problem so it's probably operator error !

Anyway, thanks for the cool display idea. I will post a picture soon.

Josh, I added the baseball players on the binder through the company. They give you the option when you order the binder. The only problem is that they only allow the engraving on the front corner of the binding and not on the spine. This is a problem when you place the binder into the cover because you dont know which binder you are pulling out. They do offer plastic/stickers that you can place on the spine of the binders but they dont look as good as the gold engraving.

As for the pages, the psa graded cards are loose. I just have to be careful when I am pulling out the binders and when I am storing them. I wish ultra pro would come out with a page that is tighter for Psa holders but for the time being its not a big deal.

You can eliminate the bowing effect by taking a strip of lath (A lath is a thin, narrow strip of some straight-grained wood or other material, including metal or gypsum) maybe an inch or two greater than the width of the frame and wedging it diagonally across the back.

Alternatively you could make a title insert for the center describing the display.

A few suggestions - you can try a very small piece of tape across one side of each top opening - works well with sgc cards and is barely noticable (take a look at my pics above and you will see the tape). The bottom cards are held in by the top cards and shouldnt be a problem. You can also try putting each slab inside a graded card sleeve and then into the ultrapro page - the card sleeve takes up some of the extra space and keeps the smaller slabs from moving as much. One last trick if you use card sleeves is to fold the flap of the card sleeve on the two top cards over the back of the ultra pro sheet and affix to the back of the ultra pro sheet rather than the back of the slab - this will keep them from moving at all.

Brian provided this link. It shows Black and White. I got mine about a week ago at the Target here in Arlington Heights. The ones they had were all brown. I'm going back tonight to buy them out.

I haven't displayed any of my graded vintage cards because I was afraid of fading, but I really like the Target frame look that Steve discovered. Are any of you worried about fading and has it been an issue?

I'm fairly new to the hobby and appreciate you sharing this great way of displaying cards with me and all the other users. I picked one of the frames up at my local Target today but am having trouble with the backing. I put 9 SGC cards in the frame but because the SGC holders are so thick the backing wont go in far enough to get the clips into the grooves. Do you really have to force it? Any suggestions?

It is tight. If you work at it you can close the clips. It will bow a little in the middle so the middle slab will shift on you. This can be remedied by using a strip of lath as suggested above or putting a title insert in the middle slot.

I'm confused here... Those HARD PSA PAGES appear to be only 1/2 inch thick according to the site that sells them.

But people here are saying that only 4 fit in a 3.5 inch album. Shouldn't 6 or 7 of them fit?

I dont believe those zipper albums are made any longer. As for the thick psa plastic slab pages - I'd recommend avoiding them unless you really want to increase your storage costs substantially. They are very expensive and, of course, you will have to buy more albums to store them in than you would other sheets. Just my .02.

Its unfortunate that MJRoop went out of business. Right before they closed up, they came out with soft sheets sized to hold psa slabs and, supposedly, were going to be coming out with similar sheets for sgc slabs. The sheets were made by ultra pro exclusively for Roop if Im not mistaken. Now that they have closed up, Im not sure those sheets will ever see the light of day.
