I own 5 1912 Boston Garters.

Four of them appear on the only known uncut sheet.

Said sheet is beautifully displayed in the book Baseball Archaeology
Artafacts from the Great American Pastime. Photography by the
great Brett WIlls.

The photograph of the sheet appears on page 47.

Players are Bescher, Chance, Chase and Clarke.

The best research article that I have seen was written by
the legendary St.Louis collector, Buck Barker. It appeared
in the Trader Speaks in 1977.

I have a 1913 Boston Garter that was once Buck Barkers
thanks to Frank Foremny. Another 1913 came from Frank
and one other from Mastros....I feel lucky !

I want a 1912 really bad, but can only hope some day
I will have some luck or should I say....be at the right place at the right time.

I think Brian that you should go into the lock-box and
show yours. I imagine that the others you want to show theirs ,have to get them from a vault, box,etc...

It is only fair that you share yours !

While my understanding is that Walter Johnson was part of the 1912 issuance, I have NEVER seen an image of one. Brian, if the Johnson you have is from 1912, PLEASE somehow show us an image!

My Christy Matthewson is in great shape. Heres a scan of the Matthewson. Only reason I have a scan of this is because it is the most expensive card in the set! My Walter Johnson from 1912 is honestly the best shape card that I have. Very clear and full of color and the corners are excellent. Does anyone out there grade these cards? let me know guys and I will work on getting scans, but with my work schedule I am always traveling and am very busy, but I will see what i can do. Thanks

brian - your message about the mathewson indicated paper loss on the back that was about 3 to 4 inches long - the message was then edited to remove this description and a scan of the back was posted which shows no such loss - what gives?

This guy is scamming us, the back scan belongs to the Boston Garter Mathewson sold in REA a few years back. I know the owner and he is not it.

The Mathewson's back has the same exact stain and print dots. Here is where I found a picture of it and the scan of the back is the same exact one he posted.

I told you guys I will have to wait until I get time to get my scans, but this is what they back looks like(Not my exact card, never said it was)I got the pic from Robert Edward Auction to use as a refference about what my backs look like. My matthewson does have paper loss 3-4 inches long, hope that clears everythig up

sounds to me as though you tried to pass this scan off as being that of your mathewson. a card missing 3 to 4 inches of paper on its back would hardly have been described as being in "great shape"

I would think an owner of a 1912 Boston Garter Mathewson be able to spell "Mathewson" correctly, but that's just me.

Whoever owns them, I think the 1912 Boston Garters of Matty and Johnson are two of the coolest cards in the entire hobby and would be pretty high on my "dream card" list of amazing cards I'll never own.

would grade ?....just seems that the differences
of the posts would not make one would think that
if you had Boston Garters and was knowledged enough
to find them ,you may not ask what a simple T206
would grade in less an inexpierienced post .If you do have those Garters, then sell me one ....BE A SPORT !

have jumped dramatically since then similar to what has happened with other
vintage series.

You're correct Dan, I thought you were talking about the one in REA two years ago. The Mathewson would be worth more more than likely what it sold for 2 years ago but I don't think anyone would know by how much. I think a guess at around the 40k mark would be a good starter estimate.

I am being 100% honest here. A guy came up to me 10 years ago and sold me those 5 cards. He knew that I collected and had a somewhat impressive collection at the time. I said waht do you want for them and he said $800 dollars. I honestly didnt know much about them but some t206's went along with the lot including a cobb, I knew that was worth it so I bought everything for $800. Looking back I will never find a deal like that again!

Other than Brian's, has anybody ever seen or for that matter heard of the existence of a 1912 Boston Garter Johnson? I know I haven't. Assuming no one else has either, I think it is really important that when Brian finds the time, he post a scan of the Johnson. Confirmation of its existence would be an incredibly important baseball card discovery.

I can confirm the existance of a 1912 Boston Garter Walter Johnson. It is owned by an occasional contributor to the board. He would like to remain anonymous at this time. I have seen a scan of the card, and it is very cool. Unfortunatly, the card has some back damage.

a good way to prove you actually own a 1912
boston garter johnson would be to describe the
image on the card allowing andy who has seen a
scan of a similar card to verify the description.
is johnson standing, sitting, kneeling, facing
forward, sideways, away, etc.

The Trader Speaks had two cover stories on Boston Garters, the early of which contained
an article written by legendary collector Buck Barker.

The later issue has a wonderful cover photo of Eddie Plank from the 1912 series.

Hi Bruce,

I can not find Boston Garter articles written in either of the TS magazines you mention.

The September 1975 has 1951 Bowman cards on the cover - no BG article.

The April 1981 has a cover photo of the BG Eddie Collins not Eddie Plank - no BG article.

A friendly board member gave me a scan to post of this Lajoie 1914 Boston Garter. The scans were 1mb so I did the best I could in downsizing. For the record I did speak yesterday to Brian Mcginn. His story is very credible and I believe he did once own the 5 Garters he previously spoke about. best regards....(this is from another board member, not Brian)....
