Default Which Card Do I Get??? Need some advice as i'm not very knowledgeable

Posted By: BlackSoxFan

Okay, so a friend of mine is about to turn 30 and I know he loves pre-war vintage cards (he thinks mine are actually worth something..haha). But he doesn't know anythign about them so i'd love to give him the bug with a little present. I'm looking for 1, maybe 2 cards in total. He's a huge cubs fan, so i don't know who to get him or which particular card...but here are my stipulations:

a) i would like to spend 30-35 but would go as high as 50 (this includes shipping)
b) Player must be a cuby
c) card must be somewhat readily available...

I've got some time so i don't mind waiting a bit to find it...but do you think i stick with a lowgrade t206 of tinker or someone like that or what.... You've got tinker, evers, chance, brown, vaughn.. a bunch of great players...what do you guys think?

Regards,

Black Sox Fan

What about a lower grade Hack Wilson...? He is the all time record holder for RBIs in a season...

I sure wish I had one to sell you...

The T205 Cubs are beautiful and some HOFers are fairly cheap.

Take the path less travelled. Don't have your gift forever valued, in part, on corner wear.

I would get him an old judge with a good image which is trimmed and skinned. They are blue chips. They never go down in value and they slowly rise.

The Cubs (White Stockings) from that era were the dominant team in baseball. They set the all time record for low number of HRs in a season, then several years later they set the high HR record which lasted until the 1927 Yankees.

You would get one of these players.

You never know, he could catch the bug.

Julie- if your scan is responsive to the question and you're willing to sell the Brown card for $50, I'll take it, chipping and all.

Hard to beat a Goudey common. In fact, if he's new to cards, a 1951 Bowman is sharp too.

O/T, you could get him an autograph of a Pre-War Cub player. Billy Herman for example is inexpensive-- and you could get a signed cachet or photo or card with good cert. (PSA/DNA, GAI, other) for your budget.

if he is a cub fan and has no cards,my suggestion is ernie banks, ron santo and billy williams.i know not prewar but you can get one of each for under $50.00. and to most people these guys are vintage, and all cub fans love these guys.

I agree with Dennis You can`t go wrong with Santo,Banks and Williams. How about 47-66 Exhibits.I know not pre-war but you can get all three for well under $50.I found all three on E-bay for less than $22.00 not including shipping.I tried to post a scan of the three I have but apparently I am a MORON and can`t figure out how!If I figure it out I will post them.

but either that or an E98 are great cards, because they both show the hand injury--I said, "condition unimportant."
You friend likes PRE-WAR, Brown is better than TEorC, and he sure was a Cub. Tbob's question was natural enough--I don't remember what I paid for it, but I guess it was more than $50. No chips; minor stains. It's the only one I have, so no sale.

Darren - responded...

guys ... this has been a very interesting take ... i'm surprised and appreciative that so many jumped in. Alright so new idea, now i think i want to put together a mini-starter set....i had been sticking with just pre-war stuff b/c he really took to thumbing through my collection (boy...it's nice to have someone think i have something really cool! - if he only knew what your guys (and julie) stuff looked like). But...there is no way to ignore the goudey's and cubby's of the 50's and sixties...okay so...

2 Pre-war (maybe a t206 and t205)..one of these is gotta be brown i think...come on the dude had 3 freakin fingers!
1 Goudey
1 40's card - have no idea who or what
1 50's topps or bowman
1 autograph or something of the sort...

okay ...condition doesn't matter at all...do you think i could do that for under 75?

this definitely will end up in the b/s/t thread at some point...

Regards,

Black Sox Fan

Ted, perhaps Im being the devil's advocate here. But if you can budget $75 for this gift, Id go with Julie's Brown.

Not because he had a damaged hand. Because he played alongside of Mathewson, and some think Brown was better. It is like the Cobb/Wagner thing. Brown has a lifetime 2.06 ERA. No wait - that can't be. Lemme check. Oh, that must be a typo in Macmillans. Better check Baseball Reference.

Or there is always an OJ beater.

Gil -
Point well taken and i had considered something like that...however..this is totally about the collection and not about the value..if i buy $75 bucks in beaters and it turns out that the cards are worth 5 bucks in two months..neither myself nor my friend will care. I just want to give him something he would think is neat.

You could always go with a few National Game or Tom Barker cards. It's a pretty inexpensive set to make and has some top notch talent.

BSF: I think "beaters" are among the most sound investment strategies available to us. And you can certainly provide a good cross-section of our options by using them to display the range of cards available.

Of course Ted, you know what will work best here. Rejoice in all of your friends who care enuff to make sure that you leave no stone unturned.

for the budget, i'd have to agree with dan. the exhibits would be very cool to a newbie.
seeing those three cubbies as young pups sure is making me feel old.
